Why Dolphin is not the best community software

Hi everybody,

Don´t get so excited about the subjet line. I´m not going to badmouth DOLPHIN or BOONEX.

But the statement on the subject has a very good reason to be.

So far, Boonex has done little (just for the benefit of the doubt) or nothing in order to help Dolphin really become a true community script. Why do I say this, because Dolphin only offers an English version. For those of us who want to build communities in other languages we just get a "do it yourself or else..." message.

I love Dolphin as a script. Of course I think it does have tons of features not even considered by other community sites. But when it comes to building a non English community, Dolphin is one the few good scripts that doesn´t offer a solution to this language issue.

I know some might say, get a language pack at expertzz... Yes, I am aware of the existence those horrible translations. If I had succeded in finding one that worked, I would not be posting this.

I did translate version 6.1x into Spanish, only to find that this long translation, word by word, expression by expression (I mean, every single line by line, not generic words from a pool of words) was completely useless with version 7x... It wouldn´t be exaggerated to think that if I translate version 7, as soon as we get an update this would become obsolete right away.

So, my request to BOONEX and this community is that you please include a simple way of storing language strings, so that they can be easily translated and used in all versions, just as so many other cms and community sites do.

When you do that, you will probably become the true best community software in the market.

Thanks and regards,

Hernán

You better wait until stable release. After then people will translate to any language and will offer it here for everyone to use(hopefully).
I do agree with Boonex to keep the site mainly in English though, but for local communities do as mentioned above.

Hi,
I know translations will be abailable at expertzzz, but that´s the whole point in my complaint, the way the script is set up makes it very difficult to have it translated. There are lots of modules (not even counting additional mods that one might want to add later) to be translated one by one. And then, every time a new version comes up, back to tranlate the whole thing again...
So my concern is that maybe Dolphin is meant to be an English only script...

In base, is every free or open source script English based. Its on people to make the different language files. I have used so many other scripts on the web, and language scrips were alway's made by others.

I agree with you that every update overwrite the original files. But not update the local file witch the new strings.

I'm not so sure that I would want the base translations. Here's why:

The base translations would cover a base dolphin install (whether it's in 6 or 7) and that consists of roughly 1900 strings (someone correct me if I'm wrong here). That is good, if you NEVER modify a thing on your site. Unfortunately, the english is not perfect on these base strings and they need to be corrected or it shows that the software was written by someone who is not native english speaking. No bust on you here Boonex, see more it's just the truth.

Now, when I build a site, it's has roughly 2700 Language strings in it. This means that you still have 800 strings to translate even after you were to add a base translation. Move it forward, I have 7 different languages currently on one of the builds. That's a ton of language strings.

What I found worked better and is a great saver is to do it as follows:

1. Replicate the english language per the admin panel language settings and create each of the language files you want. In my case, I did this 7 times.

2. Set up your Dolphin (you can see Anton to get this done) to enable you to edit all languages at one time and when you hit save it saves them all.

3. Once you are finished translating for the day (or the entire thing) then recompile each of the languages. You will be updated and in good shape.

For those who don't speak all the languages they wish to translate to, I highly recommend you pull a few hundred dollars out of your pocket and hire someone who is completely fluent in English and the language your looking to translate to. Meaning, they better be able to speak, read and write both languages perfectly and be familiar with slang and multiple meanings of words in the English Language.

You want to compete with the big sites out there, you need to be able to produce the same results they do. Dolphin does have the ability to do what your requesting, to do what I do does take a little modification.

Your just asking for someone to provide you with the translations for free.
