I think we should definitely have this Yahoo Messenger like feature, because sometimes members don't want to be bothered by a thousand chat pop-ups once they log in.. What I propose is to have an option on the login screens (simple and ajax), a checkbox "Invisible to Everyone" and also a little button (maybe in the floating bar) to change the status from invisible to visible, busy, custom status etc..

This feature can be extended like this: Visible to all, Visible only to friends, Visible only to group "X" and "Y", Visible only to member "X" etc..

We already have such feature. Click on your nickname in floating menu to change your online status.
