New install of 6.1.6 questions

Hi,

I'm new here today and I have a few questions before I download and try an install of Dolphin. I have been searching around the site, pouring over features and reading some of the forum posts for the past few hours and I think that I would like to try installing Dolphin, but first I have a few questions.

1. My site is currently hosted as a subdomain on a Baby Croc account from Hostgator.com that's running php version 5.2.8. It's a Linux/Unix server running Apache 2.2.11. Can I install Dolphin on a subdomain and will this hosting account meet the necessary requirements to run Dolphin?

2. Currently, I am using the social networking community service powered by Kickapps.com to power my community, but I have found their services to be somewhat unreliable. That's why I want to move to a self hosted software like Dolphin for my community needs. My community is rather new and small, but I would like to retain the members that I do have, with minimal effort on their part during the transition. Does anyone know if there are any migration services available to make the move from the Kickapps platform to Dolphin?

3. Can my site still include pages that are not from Dolphin (self created) once Dolphin is installed or do all site pages have to be created from within Dolphin after installation? If not, how hard is it to modify the CSS of Dolphin created pages to mesh with your site's look and feel?

4. Has anyone used DolphinGeeks.com for an install? If so, would you recommend their services?

1. Hostgator is not a good choice for Dolphin. If you send in a support ticket, they will tell you to get a dedicated server or you cannot run it.

2. I'm unsure about this. Most things can be done for a price, but I think this would be pretty spendy. Another option (since your community is small), would be to sign each of your members up to your new Dolphin install & create temporary passwords for them. Afterwards you could send them the info & they could adjust their accounts accordingly. It would still be rather time consuming though.

3. There are ways of framing pages in Dolphin. That might be the easiest. See http://www.dialme.com/articles/entry/How-to-create-a-simple-IFRAME for instructions on how to accomplish this.

4. I haven't used DolphinGeeks, but I would recommend.............

1. http://www.megabyte-hosting.com - It's run by DosDawg. He is very well versed in all things Dolphin. He's also a long time member of Unity - as well as a moderator here

2. http://www.dolphininstalls.com/ - Nice guy, good support, and fast setup. Very affordable prices with month to month payments on all hosting packages.

3. http://www.joombyte.com - Very reasonable prices, fast support response, and several hosting options. Joombyte isn't entirely compatible with the latest version of Dolphin, unfortunately. It will run 6.14 perfectly however.

Hope this helps you a little.
Good luck & welcome to the community!

Sorry about the dreaded double post.
It happens from time to time here, though I don't know why.

I stand corrected then. I haven't used Hostgator so I can't really say. I was just going by what I have read in the past, here on Unity.

There are a lot of competing Dolphin hosts. I think some of them badmouth others just to try and get a little more business. It's just a hunch, but I bet I'm not far from the truth.
