"Extensions" stink...

Let me tell you why... I think most of the programmers on expertzzz are amateurs like myself. Everything I know about PHP is self taught from books and experimentation. All of my mods are things that I created for my OWN websites and I thought it would be cool to share them, and I never thought $5-$10 was too much to ask.

Well now we have "extensions".. has anyone read the requirements? There are only two people here who are going to be able to meet those requirements.. Anton and Ray. The rest of us are out of luck. I guess this is good and bad, it will prevent people from selling crap they downloaded from dotcombuilder.com and Cody from ripping people off.. but at the same time it is going to prevent small time programmers like me from contributing anything.

One of the requirements says the extension CAN'T be a bug fix?? Why would they care if we provide something that fixes one of the screw ups in Dolphin? I put out the "fix music hang" months ago and everyone that downloaded it thanked me over and over.. then the "xss exploit fix"... from now on you will be forced to wait for the next version of Dolphin, and if you can't upgrade (like most people) then you're out of luck.

The only thing wrong with the old expertzzz was they needed SOMEONE to watch over it and see what was being posted... and respond when someone was ripped off. Instead they have created this system and killed 80% of the new mods that would have been developed.

I agree, but at the same time it is going to weed out alot of the junk. I guess the only thing we can do at this point is post the code in a forum post or link to the files on our own sites....

the only thing i didnt like about expertzzz was the people charging 30 - 40 bucks for a fix in code.

You're right...small programmers are going to lose their work... Though Boonex is trying to go Joomla, Mambo, and other CMSs way, i don't think they have coded Dolphin in a manner that Extensions can be released for it. Change in code seems to be mandatory for modifying dolphin. And if one wants to improve his dolphin site, he would be ready to make changes to the code. Now we have to watch what's ahead for dolphin...

@ CyberXing
Will guyz like me get ur toolkit? :-)

I'm sure that our requirements are very reasonable.
1. this can essentially raise up your programming skills in php and Dolphin
2. so about 'minimum changes in sources' this is good too - just because will simply apply mods and will allow you to have as much modifications as you wish since will prevent collisions in mods
3. so about selling the bug fixes, .. not sure that it's a good idea, if you find an issue and solution to solve it why don't you want to share it for free?
4. To be honest - our requirements not so hard to keep. This is just good and right programing style
5. post-moderation will contrived to prevent all our guys from junk (like mod with txt file where just email :) ) and bad mods (possible stealed, like CodyT syndrome)

Hi everyone.
boonex.com/unity claims to become professional platform for professional developers and professionally made extensions that bring extra rich functionality.
So make your output regarding this statement. If an extension doesn't bring any extra functionality (bug-fixes) it can't be published. If an extension consists of one readme file with a few code inserts into original Dolphin script, it can't be a rich extension.
It's an idea of the whole Unity platform in my opinion.

If you want to share your good thoughts and investigations concerning some bugs in Dolphin, you are welcome to make a blog post. Everyone will be happy and you will get very positive feed-back.
If you are not a professional developer and want to publish and sell your extensions, this is an opportunity for you to raise your professional level, learn more, develop more professionally and therefore earn more money.
I think this will be useful for everyone and you are the one who will get the most profit from it.

I agree with you AndreyP and Rayz, it will take some time, but I think all Extensions will greatly benifit everyone.

Uniform, Clean, Documented Modifications, what an idea.

Lookin' forward to the toolkit, I've got lots of ideas in mind. Nice to see the new unity and the future of BoonEx.

mscott,

Regardless of the extensions and new rules, it will not prevent anyone from buying your mods relating to the XSS Exploit Fix and other mods you've sold.

What it does do is raise the bar by adding a formality to the process.

If you are familiar with ISO or SigmaSix, these are what the corporations strive for -- systems and processes. It gives their clients and prospects confidence in their skill sets and eventually winning their business as well.

The car you drive probably went through some kind of ISO process and so did that milkshake or burger you ate at the burger joint. Systems and processes are intended to output consistent quality each time and every time. That is what I've learned from my clients and it's something I often hear.

ONE BIG BENEFIT IS THIS:
You can be sure it will weed out the likes of your nemesis CodyT which by the way I do appreciate whenever you flag him down. But then again, I think you knew that :D

I know for me, I will write a mod for training so people can try it out on their site. My mods are easy to work with and only takes a few sentences to explain how to install and run it. The best part is that most of my mods are free :)

From what I can see mscott, this can improve our game and can sharpen our PHP skills.

So gentlemen, start your extensions...

er...or something like that.

...sip...

In any case you don`t should publish your mods only here, expertzzz will work parallel, but it will not so self for customers, hope you understand, Unity will really safe for purchasing mods (we all hope), that you don`t get any tricks and cheats from other.
This is our new experimental beginings.

Wow... people actually read my blog?? Well thanks for the words of encouragement... and after re-reading my original post I feel somewhat like a jerk for saying that Anton and Ray will be the only two who can meet the requirements, I know Jtadeo and CyberXing won't have a problem either. Also Mrpowless. So the question is, if I come up with something mega cool on one of my sites will I take the time to write an "admin" area for it and an "installation wizard".. probably not. I guess if it is something I REALLY think should see the light of day on Unity I'll pass it on to one of the REAL programmers on here and let them put the finishing touches on it. Do I need to sharpen my skills in PHP... YES. Will I ever be at the level of Anton, probably not. But let me ask you something.. by setting up this tight system here but leaving expertzzz the way it is are we really fixing anything? Expertzzz is still overflowing with Iframes to other sites and stolen mods... template sites from dotcombuilder and if I see one more person selling that "page peel" they found for free I'm going to vomit.... I say either clean up expertzzz or close down the mod section there and move everything here.

Quick reply to everyone:
carreral4 - Yes, very fed up.. is that really you in the picture?
dolphin_jay - Good idea! (linking to our own files)
CyberXing - Sign me up for the beginners version of your took kit :-)
gameutopia - Ditto, some of them confused me too
gkcgautam - Yup, big changes
AndreyP - have to disagree, some of them seem unreasonable
Rayz - I'm not really concerned with making more money, improving my skills would be nice but you can only teach yourself so much.
nuccca - For the future of Boonex to really be clean we need to fix expertzzz too.
Jtadeo - "start your extensions", hahahahahahahaahahahaha

I don't think the requirements or standards are very strict at all, they seem quite reasonable. And I can say I would be 1000 more times likely to actually by mods that meet the standards.

People keep using CodyT as an example, but I think there are bigger issues involved here. Expecially as dolphin grows in popularity and becomes more flexible and modified.

Without these standards there will be too many opportunties for conflicts in the code, to many different styles of code, and a lot more complications in installation and upgrading.

Bug fixes and simple mods SHOULD be offered for free anyway, thats the strength of a support community like this, and people trying to charge for those things should not.

This will ensure quality and ease of mind.

How many mods have backdoors? How many mods leave opportunities for its author to come and steal your entire database? They could even automate it. This should avoid a lot of these issues. And if these mods are on an actual Boonex site, they NEED to endure some quality and standards. Good job Boonex.

And yeah, I would actually suggest phasing expertzzz out over the nex several months and shutting it down entirely to get rid of some of those problems... and I think it is sorta beyond fixing.

Why not release this stuff free and ask for donations? I meen the people who want to pay for your stuff are gonna donate and the people who dont are just going to find a way to steal it!

I know you might be trying to make a living or a little extra money to support your site, but I have been doing this a long time and you honestly make more in the long run releasing something for free and asking for donations then you do just charging a one time fee.

I used to write mods for a game engine and people would charge I would release for free. I had one guy drop a $1000 in my paypal account and a long thank you letter about how I was a good person for helping everyone out.

Even if BOONEX throws off there site the mods for sale

Boonex wont loose money and the users wont have to worry about being overly charged and BOONEX will gain back there COMMUNITY.

does it matter there if BOONEX gets rid of the MODS for $$
( users who make them and sell them )
the answer is NO cause once you throw off 1 there are 1000 more new users to replace 1 guy :>

I for 1 cant believe that BOONEX puts up with people selling mods on here but i know this will change for the better 1 day.
