D7: Remastering the User's Interface

ydrargyros posted 22nd of August 2009 in Community Voice. 10 comments.

I post this to hear your ideas on re-arranging the User Interface that Dolphin 7 already has (at least in the betas).

So , every thought is welcome!

Remember, it has to do with everything that might help a user find his way easier through a Dolphin web Community, from stronger colors to image sizes to actions a user can / must do to perform all operations!

Check the image and brainstorm freely on this! it really matters alot to everyone who uses dolphin to build a community!

All suggestions and ideas are more than welcome

I think the big thing would be is how simple a average to novice computer user can navigate through a dolphin site. How many steps does it take to perform a specific function. To a average user alot of steps could be overwhelming.
I personally like how its setup but i have heard some people say it is almost too much too many steps to do certain things , post photos and things of that nature.

i agree with mistertunechat... i also got complaint from my member about how is complicated to navigate and go into a specific section or to add content or manage photo or profil...
ydrargyros
yeah it has 3 different menu bars and a breadcrumb ribbon :/

i want to suggest a thing about the

Access is forbidden

error message.... its not enough specific...and not inviting people to correct this missing requirement... first : why i dont have the permission? because im not a member or because the membership must be upgraded? the error message should say : you must be a registred member to access to this content.... or you must upgrade to premium membership to access to this content... (with a link to the signup section or upgrade section) so see more this way the user will know why he cant access to this area and will clearly know what he should do to be able to access it...

Thanx for the interest you show people! Now let's see!
@mistertunechat wanna make together a list of the most simple actions a user would perform,so as to count steps (and alternative steps)?

@totallyfreak yeah i see a couple of "logic" problems in the D7b4 beta! One is the one you mention, and the other is Ads vs Store
totallyfreak
the store feature should be only manage by admin... only the admin should sell things via the store... thing from the website or with the website logo... like tshirt, cap, mouse pad.... user dont need to sell item via the store... because they already have access to the ads section...

The Whole key to driving traffic should be simplicity + content with one adding to the other! The simpler or less steps a user needs to perform simple tasks in a site, the less he get's bored or even doesn't bother at all to take the time on the site! I am trying to simplify the Wall module both logic-wise and code-wise so as to make it look more like Facebook's wall (or even better if that is possible). Keep your ideas going on! I really got my hands into this!

@totallyfreak. I just installed the store module and WHY O WHY are members allowed to sell products in the store? Okay, there must be a demand for member to be able to sell their warez as well as admin/site owner, otherwise it would not have been coded that way, but I would say there would be much more demand for it to be restricted to the admin/site owner than for it to be available to all. Maybe I have missed something and there is an option to disable but I see no other way of disabling the members see more selling abilities other than hacking the code. In short it makes this option useless to 95% of the people wanting to use a shop.

Also, I was not interested in selling videos or files, but merely a few items of branded clothing which would need to be posted. Yes, including caps and t-shirts...

Think I will drop this module like a hot potato and just use a basic hand coded dolphin page for paypal purposes.

Lastly, if the store were to be changed to accomodate items to be sent via snail mail, then the ability to record the postal address and invoice address (if diferent) need to be included . Also purchases need to be available to non-members.
