Necessary item? Yes. In D6 we had the site stats that at least showed stuff awaiting moderation on the admin dashboard's index page.

Yes, and that did help alot cause sometimes we wouldn't go to all the feature management sections all the time and when logging in to the admin panel always lead us to the admin home page which would give us the notification.
