This seems extremely major to me, and the advice, "you should complete all work with the custom fields BEFORE you really upgrade your script" - is a bit late and not very useful. Really, what you are saying here is that the 7.01 upgrade just doesn't work. Personally I think you should stop all new downloads of 7.01 until this is corrected - everyone will have to fix this.
