What about in situations where the author of the topic is asking for web hosting provider recommendations, or a certain modification? I'm against people blasting off "switch to [web hosting provider]!" whenever they get the chance, even when the author has no intention to, but what about those times when this is what the author is asking for? I believe that restricting owners of these companies from recommending themselves makes sense, but what about actual customers (given, that they don't see more sneak in those annoying affiliate links)?

"unless requested"

In short, common sense applies, but we'll probably be giving more detail along the way. Generally, if the topic requires the link, then yeah, by all means it may be posted.
