suPHP (which is installed on my Apthost server) prevents php instructions being enabled within .htaccess. This is apparently for security reasons. It also prevents CHMOD 777 permissions changing them to 755. This (according to Apthost) should not be a problem.

The solution apparently is to rewrite all the php instructions within .htaccess as a php.ini file. Failure to do this will cause a internal server 500 error.
