The second one, made in China, will be on a garbage pile long before 25 more years have gone by. The first one, will still be around.

Let me put it a different way. The second one will be on a garbage pile before the next model comes out. It would be nice if laptops wouldn't fall apart soon after the warranty expires.

oh c'mon, that depends on how harsh you are with your laptop. Most laptop runs fine for 3/4 years depending on moderate usage and they are designed to be "portable" and not used like a desktop anyway so don't expect it to...

btw how portable would you rate the 1st one on a scale of 1 to 10 *LOL*

so much to do....

If it has a handle on it, and fits in the overhead compartment, I'm ok with it. I used a Compaq portable for a long time. I really miss it.

Not too much difference between the two, unfortunately. The newer one is just smaller, faster and shinier. Same general idea, same form-factor, same interaction methods. In 25 years it has been improved, but not reinvented. Even tablets only added an on-screen-keyboard, but are the same thing otherwise. That's 25! years of seemingly booming innovation.

Where's the promised AI? Brainwave controls? 3D holograms? Urine-powered batteries? Haptic porn?

One word...

Disappointment.

How much did the first one cost, how many were sold, what was the percentage of the world population that actually bought one? How much revenue was generated? How many people were employed in the building, selling, servicing and distributing them?

Now tell me the same stats about the second one and tell me nothing has changed.

Here's your brainwave controls, just put this on and hook it up to your tablet..

LMAO ... I covered a story about Brainwave Emotion Controlled Cat Ears by Necomimi- Cosplay Headbands when they first appeared!

For anyone that don't know what the hell we are talking about: the ears move / respond to your mood etc letting other people know how you are feeling pretty much like cat / dog would move it's ears !

Yeah, I'm sure Andrew would look great with these:-

I'm pretty sure he was speaking of the general architecture.  The biggest driver of changes was sub micron wafer processes in the semiconductor industry, giving birth to smaller, denser and faster devices. The building blocks are smaller and faster, but the architecture is not that different.

The fluffy ears make for an important feature - current brainwave control devices do little beyond making you look silly and feel frustrated. At least the ears show one's admittance of not being serious about it.
