Anyone Else Have Unresolved Issues

I must admit that I jumped right into using Dolphin without much hesitation. I had already done a Social Engine project and did not enjoy working within their framework when it came to hacks.

So I chose Dolphin. At first I though it was open source but now I realize that could not be farther from true. Basically, it is a free version that nickels and dimes you after that. Just the right to post this question cost $5.

Oh well, no biggie. My only suggestion would be to tone down the FREE part in the advertising a bit. It tends to make people think it is really free. and without nags.

Aside from that, I realize it takes a lot of work to build a script like this and have no problem with the money part, except that, it would be nice to get a version that pretty much works at least 95% before convincing my client to buy a license. I am already a little embarrassed for going down this road but I feel like there is no turning back.

I am experiencing a few real problems with this thing. That is typically no big deal at all. I am quite used to working through problems and fixing bugs with the support of online user communities. But, with Dolphin, it seems like either there are issues that only myself and my dev customer are experiencing or these issues simply are not discussed.

1. The Wall

The provided wall module is bsically useless. The logged in user can only see their own posts. That is pretty bad, isn't it? Do I have any agreement there? I guess I could start from step one to try and get it working but find it hard to believe there has been no headway made by anyone else on this issue. I found an encrypted solution somewhere but certainly do not want to buy anything encrypted.

2. There is a status update box at the top of the profile page. This does not work. Is this problem limited to just myself and my client? Because I can find nothing about it.

3. Video comments do not work. Not that video comments are a deal breaker. RMS is configured. This seems like a browser problem. I do get Javascript errors on every page of the script, for what it's worth.

That's a start. Maybe someone here can bolster my confidence about choosing Dolphin. Because, so far, this whole community is starting to look like buyers and sellers and I am hoping the developers are not strictly sellers.

It took days before my status update worked. As for the video comments, I have to use a head set and mic to record, even with settings set for my webcam w/mic.This software is far from being FREE, and far from being STABLE.

Open source has nothing to do with being free. It's a common misconception.

Open-source, independent, downloadable, scalable, customizable, full-featured, free software for building social networks, dating sites and web-communities.

it implies cost of ownership is free - it is not.

Notice how those are commas, separating the different aspects of the script. It is also free, and purchase is optional. It is true that you most likely will need to invest in third party modifications if your needs extend through that of what this script offers for defaults, but things such as licenses are completely optional.

Now, regarding the new features and fixes to issues that are pushed through the market by the development team... Well, that's one hell of a road to go down. That angers me, and as far as I am aware, only BoonEx does this.

It is free. Paying anything for Dolphin is a choice. For those who require more than what the defaults of this script offer, they will need to open their wallets/login to PayPal/enter their credit card number/send a money order/wire funds.

I use Dolphin with a free license for numerous sites, all without any issue.

I too have many unresolved issues, of the issues that I have posted, few have been acknowledged, let alone fixed. Now I simply do not bother reporting them.

Fortunately I can fix them myself, but that is not the point.

I give you a car - it is free - you have paid nothing for it. However it is not free to own - you have to put petrol in it, give it oil changes, replace the tyres when they wear out, it has to be insured, you have to pay tax to drive it on the road...

Cost of ownership is not the same thing as being free to purchase.

Except you're implying that owning Dolphin is like owning a car, when that isn't the case. Unless you're referring to the web hosting, which has nothing to do with Dolphin itself (good thing that isn't taxed, eh?).

I am aware that you were providing an analogy, but I am saying that it makes no sense when compared to Dolphin. Dolphin is not like a car, where you need to shovel out money to have on the road, but you can purchase accessories and new parts if you wish. For example, I would like Dolphin to come with those fuzzy cubes.

And no, I am not home schooled.

dolphin would be like getting a free car with 2 flat tires and the engine only starting 50% of the time. sure, you can drive it, it's just very frustrating

Dolphin 8 will be the last version of Dolphin, which will be replaced with Trout.

Fuzzy cubes - I believe Arthur has a mod for those.
