Can this be done?

This is what i would like to do.... On my join page i put a promo box and i have cards with a promo code on them, So if a person comes to my site they can enter the promo code from the card when they join and by enting the code it will make them a gold member not the standerd member.....so can this be done? anyone have step by step on how to do this? PLEASE....
