Just came across this: http://www.boonex.com/unity/extensions/entry/3K_Member_Database_with_Pics and noticed that three uses have given it five star reviews in all categories. It occurred to me that someone who makes fake profiles, might not mind making fake reviews either. Do you think the ones are real there? |
Either way, I don't approve of the modification. It's borderline sleazy and in my opinion, brings the value of a web site down considerably. Also, what's the legal position on the use of the images and information provided by the "membership?"
Judging from how fast these reviews appeared, and the general tone of them, it would lead one to suspect that they are fake, as well. However, these appear to be actual members, but it doesn't mean they weren't tipped for their service.

you never know all it needs is a 3 in the profiles table [ROLE]

Legal aspects, lets see: 1) potential use of someone's likeness without permission and for profit; 2) libel & slander for info contained within the profile; 3) possible use of copyright pictures leading to potential (in US) fine of 250,000 per picture; 4) possible obscene or illegal pictures contained within the profile, etc.
Non-legal possibilities: 1) backdoor as prolaznik suggested; 2) malicious code embedded inside the profile; 3) site with thousands of users, some online, and nobody using the site = obvious scam site; 4) i'm sure there is more....

What I could never get about these things is who are they trying to fool? Maybe you could get some people to register there but then they are just going to encounter a bunch of fake profiles - what is the point? Do you think your users will like you after they learn that you have tricked them. Maybe they are trying to sell site advertising, but that would just be outright fraud. I just have never understood the purpose of these things. |

Perhaps it's the odd belief that some people hold that to be successful, you already need to be successful.

I like how they brag now that, "You can even set members status to ONLINE. You can control how many members to show ONLINE"
A lie on top of a lie. I wonder why Boonex would allow such a dishonest product in their market?
