Yes, MariaDB is compatible with Dolphin 7.4.2.  Are you going to a server you have full sys-admin rights?  If so, then I suggest setting up a repo using the settings you can find on the MariaDB site so that you can have the latest stable version.  Many of the distros will ship an older version of MariaDB in their repos.

You just click through your OS and platform architecture and it will provide the text you enter in the repo.
