Registration by invitatin only problem

I want to be able to use the add a friend function, but when I receive the email and click on the link it takes me to the page that says by invitation only. I want my approved members to invite their friends, but keep random people from stumbling onto my site and joining.

How can I make this link work in "by invitation only" mode? I need it to work.

will a link to invite to joining another members (here 3 is your ID)

In admin it says "Registration by invitation only (need before Enable affiliate support)".

Does that means this feature is for affiliates only or rather applies to normal member registration?

Yes, need disable free mode and enable affiliate support (just to register new members), and after enable this 'invitation registration'  :)

This option is accessible for anybody, but it will work only when Enable Affiliate Support is also checked.

So its not possible to have site in free mode with affiliates disabled and Registration by invitation only enabled?
