Everything's Amazing

Something sort of related, I see a correlation between this video (see below) and what BoonEx has provided in terms Dolphin. The message is that Dolphin is really an amazing product. It makes all the other apps seem primitive.

Let's not forget what it was that brought us all here in the first place. It is because Dolphin at the time of our venture or decision making was the best choice and that is why we became members. That's why we argued. Called each other names. Complimented. Gave advice. We got involved in the community.

Here's the video:

I came from web circa 1993 and to me this a great app and it is simply amazing. It is not perfect, but I can tell you it is more than what I would want to personally take on. Although, that is one of reasons I found Dolphin. I did try to make my own social networking app.

Here's an idea. A bit rough, but see if this can work:

I'm just throwing this out and see what happens. Andrew/BoonEx should consider a retroactive price for those with 100 points or more. 100 points (or whatever they decide) or more can show or gives indications of a members level of community involvement, contribution and care for the product. It also shows that other members have appreciated their help or viewpoints.

Your thoughts please, everyone.

Let's not lose our wits about us. See what the alternatives are.

As well, I do appreciate people's viewpoints regardless of whether they conflict with mine or not. That is how we grow.

However, if you engage me with it, I also believe you need to defend and prove. Generally, you are entitled to your own opinions, not your own facts.

I don't even know how to get points... lol

I am relatively new to the community and have already helped about 5 (ssh login, etc.) people getting their RMS working but not sure if I got points for that. I asked for some money and so far only one person paid me. But that's okay because I didn't require them to pay me before fixing their problem.

Here is how I would have done the pricing differently:
Dolphin, Orca, Ray, etc. 6.1.x - old pricing structure.
Dolphin 7 - new pricing structure.

and see more then pro rate upgrades from 6.1 to 7

But besides that, its still free.... sure there are some adds in places... But whatever.. If the developers can make money off of their script then the chances of them spending more time in fixing bugs and making improvements is much greater.

I do understand the frustration. I guess I didnt realize how many people are trying to do this themselves rather than be a worker bee for someone else that puts up the money..

I love that video by the way.. saw it off of digg or reddit a while ago...

kernepaniker,

Yes, this video is one of my faves and helps to put things in perspective about what an amazing time it is for us.

I think similar can be said about Web. The Internets is for realzzz! It is useful and many are seeing how it can be and has been used to accomplish great and good things.

My love with Dolphin was at first sight, I learned lot at Boonex forum, but when trying to help ppl with free installation and free trial VPS, some1 called me SCAM, i was just surprised, but get some support too. Now I installed for 1, and 1 using my free VPS to learn Dolphin, hope will get some points. Feeling happy to be Dolphin Community Member and here i am growing daily with my learning.

? where do we see how many points we have ?

Thanks
Andrew Boon
Nice idea. I have something in mind - will announce on Monday-Tuesday.

unoboonex, thanks for considering a possible alternative. Personally, I'm fine with what's happened as I did catch the blue light special, but I do know a few of my own clients were very disappointed to hear about the announcement and some were just estatic as they were owners of SmartPro licenses.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

My viewpoint is that even IF I had several months to produce a product of similar caliber as Dolphin, at this time, it would just be an exercise in futility. There is a lot of work + expertise + time + effort in producing these types of applications. You get all that with Dolphin wrapped up in an install.

Making web apps is hard work. It takes a lot of time, effort and expertise.

I have constantly seen posts on the forums about how someone took massive amounts see more of hours and days for 1 simple mod or function to work. They would chime in on the forum all frustrated asking for help. And that's what the forums are for, to help one another.

Now compare that scenario with what you have for FREE with Dolphin. To have it FREE you merely just have to give credit where credit is due. How simple is that? You want to take out the credit, that's fine too. But you need to compensate the owners. I would think that would be the same scenario if you were in the same shoes as BoonEx.

Again, remember what it is you have gotten and how much you've gotten out of this app called Dolphin.

Just looking around, I see a few hundred sites online and people actually using it. I see several developers and programmers gaining benefits by offering additional services around Dolphin. There is a growing ecosystem of site owners, developers, designers and hobbyists growing flourishing here.

This would not have been possible without the initial efforts of BoonEx. They have a been a catalyst for many people's ideas and dreams.

I do this for a living. Programming and development is my daily work. What BoonEx has done is amazing. Remember that.

100% Agree with you James.

I am not a PHP Programmer, but Dolphin is an amazing product i can learn and modify very easily without much tech skill.

I am lucky i get Boonex when searching at google.

I think something should be done to give members a chance to purchase the software at retroactive price since there wasn't a grace period before new prices went into effect.
Minimum of 100 points?

I think it should be (wait let me check my profile) a minimum of 600 days membership and 35 points. :)

I am just hoping the permanent licenses earned for fighting bugs and sorting problems carries over into the new licensing.
Andrew Boon
The "earned" licenses will definitely carry over. We'll sort out the remaining licese issues on Monday and iwll make an announcement.

I think admin can give points to members giving proper reply with answers(solution) at forum post, without any advertisement of their mods.

Sometime i read a very good answer post at forum, but member did not get any point from the person who take help. I read, apply, and if solved my prob, i gave positive point to that answer post.

Hmm... interesting concept. A peer networking kind of thing. An incentive way to help out another fellow and get points for that. Nice idea.
