It IS Free, Soon It Will Not Be Free!

Talking with another member of Unity, we were discussing current issues and trends that eventually turned to the evolution of Boonex, Unity and Dolphin.  What else did you think we'd talk about?  Fish?

Of course, this convesation ineviteably turned to Andrew's recent blog post concerning the 12 scoops (and we're not talking about ice cream here) that are making up the new Unity that is about to come out as D7 moves into it's stable tank.

The most interesting topic it seems is how Dolphin is no longer going to be as free as it currently is.  Right now, you can download Dolphin, grab a free license and you only need to pay a host a few dollars to be up and running.  You can even have your Video Chat/IM/Boards all working within minutes and you have still paid nothing for Dolphin or it's functions.  Those days are about to join Michael Jackson.

Within the blog written by Andrew, post number 8 is about to have the largest effect on the largest number of users.  This is where Boonex is announcing that they will be doing away with the BMS (Boonex Media Server).

What this means, is if your are running a Dolphin-Free site it is going to cost you additional funds each month or you will be forced to remove certain options from your site.  Video Chat/IM/Boards will not work for you once the BMS is turned off and will continue to not work until you make arrangements with another RMS provider (This will require you to pay a monthly fee) or you install your own RMS.

For those who are on a VPS or Dedicated Server, the installation of your own RMS is going to be the wisest move to make, for those on Shared Servers your only option will be to lease from another provider.

Now we know that Boonex gave you a free product to use in return for advertising their software, and you will still have the free product, only the terms of what it provides you with appear to be changing.

In this instance I am glad to say that I set myself up from the beginning with the means to run without dependency on boonex or others by setting up from the beginning with the correct types of servers and installing my own RMS.  For those who have not been able to do this, the time has come unfortunately for you to either open your wallets or turn parts of your sites off.

Which are you going to do?

It must have been my bad (oh heck im picking up trendy youth talk now.. LOL ) as i could never get the free RMS to work, so i just though it just didn't work for anybody. Ive come to the conclusion though that perhaps the reason i couldn't get on it was because it was always so full. I guess then there will be a lot of complaining when it finally goes away, but then again, its never a bad thing to get yourself your own resources, and its not that expensive really. you cant expect to run something see more like like this on the cheap not forever anyway.

I personally never understood why they had the "free" RMS service. (I guess it was to ensure that they had users of their software) The installation of RMS is nothing and there are going to be a number of hosting/resellers that are going to be providing RMS for a fee. From what I have been able to see, RMS is the most bandwidth intensive part of Dolphin.

Dolphin is a great platform and is really opening up the "social site" type of website, but as it becomes more popular and see more more companies/individuals are using it, a new market for those that support Boonex/Dolphin will be creeated.

I hate to say it, but as the popularity of the software platform grows, a new market is created for the Dolphin supporting web hosting companies. In these recent economic times of trouble, this seems to me to be a good thing.

Users can still get a "free" version of Dolphin, but the burden will be for them to pay somebody for the "extras" that Dolphin provides. This, in turn, will foster better relations in the hosting community for those that are providing the extras that the the free version doesn't include.

see moreIt is sad news for those using the free service, but I for one had every intention of setting up my own dedicated server and media server. The thought was to keep everything under one hat so to speak. Less load and more comfort regarding up time and service.

But truth be told, I was surprised that it was offered for free along with a free script. While there are many free scripts, plugins etc for various programs, most of the hosting and server side issues are normally absorbed by the site owner.

Talk about misleading titles...

Anyway, Dolphin, per se, will remain free. We're closing down BMS, for it's getting fairly loaded, while it's not the cheapest machine. About 700USD/mo right now.

We provided it for free for a while to make it easier to deploy Dolphin on cheap hosting accounts, but right now more and more hosting providers provide affordable packages with RMS.

Moreover, Dolphin 7 has build-in messenger and modules can be tirned off easily, so one can deploy a Dolphin-based see more site on an account without RMS, albeit with limited functionality.

Indeed the title is not good, I was thinking of the free licenses.. talking frankly the free RMS never worked for 99% of us, from my part I don't consider it a big loss..

ha, the title is fine, its an attention getter, you have to actually read the post to find out what is underlying. very effective title.

Terabyte Hosting Solutions does provide Stand Alone RMS, for all those who will be requiring that service. Try it for 10 days free, then we can discuss a service contract.

Dolphin Installs does provide a month by month RMS service as well. Try it for free for 7 days to see that it works. Then simply allow the free trial to run out to subscribe monthly.

So.... does this mean that I won't be able to set up a social networking site on my home Pentium 2 anymore?
CodeSatori
Possibilities for hosting social networks at home are subject to the limitations of your home configuration.

I hope dophin and ray will remain free, because that is what I like about dophin, and ray that you can use it for free with all features except you have to have ads, which is alright consiring that other people are charning for their scripts and I like that this script is free.

Below is the legacy version of the Boonex site, maintained for Dolphin.Pro 7.x support.
The new Dolphin solution is powered by UNA Community Management System.
