Started A new site.. But where do I find users to join?

roldan posted 29th of March 2009 in Community Voice. 14 comments.

I spent days finding the right host, hours installing and modifying my site, lots of tech support communication and basic tweeking.

The last thing which should've been the first thing is "Where Do I find People to Join?" I need to populate my site but not having any luck. Am I the only one with this issue or am I missing something that people on here already know?

Well community sites are pretty much dead. Most people are bored with community sites and they dont like registering in new sites. Your best bet is to add a lot of content which interest people to join and start posting your sites in famous forums and blogs such as digital point forums.

It takes a loooooong time to build a membership... like esteem said you better get something awesome because why would anyone want to join a new site that is exactly like millions of other sites. Oh and I would seriously reconsider your domain name.. firstly no one is going join a site that is trying to copy another major site, and secondly Google is going to be a MAJOR source of your traffic.. but they are goijg to deindex you when they see that name.
Ok, here is a the big mistake that lots people make. You need to have the Community first then bring the software/your site to the community.
Either a physical community of people that actually know each other in the "real world" like YouDidntDidYou.co.uk or a community of shared interests ie Boonex is a community of people with a shared interest in bring communities together. Otherwise its not just going to happen people just aren't interested in joining communities for the sake of it.

Dolphin/Hookie see more is just a tool for bringing a community together, it doesn't create one out of thin air.......

buckmcgoo - I think they will do more than just deindex. If they are anything like Microsoft they will sue for violation of intellectual property rights.

you have to have a site that people want to join, one they feel they need.

Yep, and you need to look after your site and members daily. My site I got a year now and spend contless hours on maintaining the site as well as my members. I got a 1000 members and did delate about 900 who didn't log-in for over 3 month.
You will have to invest if it is for your pleasure or for business it doesn't matter.

Its not just putting a community site there and people will come,

I'm still learning and trying to find the right magnet for people and I'm sure I do have really good domains. But your domain www.uGoggle.com is surely a no go domain. There is only one google :-)

You need:
-a good domain name
-a good brand
-a target of people
-a good SEO work (part of online marketing)
-a good brand management
-a good design
-some good advertising campaign
-a lot of dedication..
-a lot of patience..
you can do all this by yourself, it's not easy but it's not impossible either.. this list is just the base of a solid "pyramid" you can build.. read about every aspect first..

Dear roldan,
I can't agree more with what has been said by other friends in here.
There is a Forum Population Service you can use, but it ONLY helps to a certain degree at a startup level :

Check their site out.
If you believe in your site, and have already a strategic plan in place... give it some love and results are a matter of time. There is space for everything if it's marketed properly to the right target group of people.
I suggest you create your see more own sort of "brand" or USP (unique selling proposition) which will make you stand out, differentiating you from competition. But to stand out in the crowd, you must be a "purple zebra" lol.
Nomatter how mad Google may get with your domain -which I doubt they would care about- you must SELL an IDEA, an IMAGE , a CONCEPT, a SUI GENERIS thing, that will generate a "buzz" around your website in Social Media.
Should you consider using my Professional Assistance for your website's promotion and FREE TRAFFIC generation, I'll be happy to help.

I believe there is opportunity in multitude, there are more than one type of breakfast cereals, more than one hamburger joint and certainly more than one coffee house, simply believe in your product and find a niche and/or provide something different. Most major sites started small and took years to grow, but somehow they paved the way for others. I sincerely believe that people are switching from the "worldwide" big guys, to community sites that are either more specific in their contents see more and/or more local in their delivery.
This said good luck
