They are the same thing. There's a category "Profile Photos", which feeds photos to profile homepage and other blocks. This scheme is used by quite a few sites, including Facebook, where you have a default album called "Photos of Me".
I don't share your point of view... Profile photos and other other photo albums are two very different things for me.
