Avatar is maybe the more easy way for the programmers working on the core script but what about the end user ???
This is already quite difficult to constrain our site's subscribers to upload a profile photo... Do you think that most of them will be so happy to play with this toy ? Do you think that they will spend time to read instruction and understand how this crop tool is working ??? And then spending some more time to find how to upload real profile photos ???
And what about the site's Admin see more ? Do you think that he will be happy to have hundreds of members with the same site avatar ???

Ergonomics is still the weak point of BoonEx sites :-(
