I have gone through several updates starting with an early version of 7 RC, I have had this issue since then.
my mail messages are empty and it still tells me I have 3 unread messages. How do I fix this?

check table sys_messages
if your mail messages are empty, delete everything where Recipient = Your member ID |

Ok, did that. didn't change a thing. Still shows 3 messages....
