Can I get other user's feedback on HostForWeb.com?

First, let me say that MY experience with HFW is an absolute nightmare. We've been with them for a little over one year. Our server has been shut down TWICE (up to 36 hours at a time) for so-called malware infection and/or CPU over-usage. I need to know how Malware gets into our server. There are only 2 people (on our side) that does anything with this server. I know for a fact we did not upload anything that would cause this. Yesterday evening, I looked up on Google to see if anyone has experienced the same issues with HostForWeb.com. I found MANY comments, from others, who had their server suspended for the exact same reasons. Most have said word-for-word of what I'm going through right now. We have 20 other hosting accounts with another hosting company and we've been with them for over ten years. (I'm not going to mention that hosting company because I don't want this to sound like a ad for them). Not one time have we ever had an infection or malware attack or CPU over-use. This is the SECOND time that our server has been down with HostForWeb and we've only been with them just over a year. As far as the CPU Over Use; they actually suspended us at the SAME TIME that they had us down for malware! How can we be abusing the server, when we're suspended for infection?? I've actually contacted about 5 other HostForWeb.com users (who have experienced the same issue). I want to get their feedback on what happened when their server was infected or so-called over-used. I just wanted to get feedback from Dolphin users on their experience with HFW. Thanks, Allen

BTW, the other hosting company is NOT a Dolphin host, that's why we have a account with HFW

I've been with HostForWeb for nearly 6 years now.  Possibly even longer.

As for CPU over-usage, The dolphin script is very VERY intense on CPU usage, Especially if you allow your site members to use mobile apps, or even worse, the desktop app (which is about .0.9 versions old now, and has been unofficially abandoned by Boonex, besides, it does nothing useful really, though it could...).  This can easily have you overfilling your CPU usage window on a VPS.  If you are on a H4W VPS, I'd highly recommend upgrading to a dedicated server.  That's what I had to do to escape these issues.  Once your running an actual dedicated server, they can't shut you down for CPU.

As for Malware, the best I can reccomend would be Securing your server so that malware cannot get in.  I know it's easy to say "But I've never had any malware on my system".  That's like saying you can't be sick because you've never caught a cold.

Your VPS can sit at 0% CPU use for hours, until someone goes on your site, and it hits 4-5%, no big deal, then someone logs into the desktop app, 25% use.  Doesn't make sense?  There are issues in Dolphin's xml.php chain (that file and/or the files it includes/calls) which result in occasional CPU spiking.  and if that happens on your server while people are on your site, multiple users perhaps using mobile apps and the desktop app, suddenly the people in the H4W Network Operations Center start getting red flags for your server node.

The only real problem I've had with HostForWeb, is that while their quality of service is high, their support staff always seem as if they never speak to each other, and they NEVER read ALL the questions you post in a ticket.  If you submit a ticket with 3 questions, one, maybe 2 (if your lucky) will be answered.  they just look at the first question, address it, then move on to the next ticket.

We have been on HFW with a dedicated server for 6 months or so and they have also shut our server down twice for alledged attacks. In the first instance they claimed that a script on our server was launching a dos attack on all other servers, and in the second incident our server root password was breached.

To be honest it was a pain in the ass, but the server is managed by HFW and they did get the server back up with 24 hours for each incident - but I pay an absolute fortune for this service and to have it brought down without notification, not text message, no call to see what was going on or anything was very bad.

If you're on a VPS and you're getting CPU usage warnings something is deffinitly wrong. About 80% of the people here could get by with shared hosting, the other 20% would be fine with a VPS. Unless your site is REALLY popular you don't need a dedicated server.

I have 40+ websites on one VPS and 6 of them are Dolphin based. Several of the sites are fairly popular and I have never come close to going into the red.

 Allen, hello.
I reviewed the tickets, and here is what happening. Your VPS experienced several times, I would use same word, an absolute nightmare overloads. Each time we simply had no chance but to save other users from being down on same hardware node. I will post bellow some details about loads, so other users can see why you are suspended.

That is recent one.

The load bellow indicate something abnormal was going on, crazy traffic spike, or problem with application. According to ticket its not related to dolphin, it was load from phpfox.
When it happens on VPS, with HostForWeb, or any other company, the VPS has no chance to be left up running, it will crash the hardware node. Cloud servers and Dedicated servers are 100% isolated and suspensions will not happen there, however, cloud or dedicated server would not handle the load bellow either.
Allen, the reason of reports and investigation we do on each such case is to help user to understand the problem with the server, script, application or simple process and give a chance to react, resolve the issue. Sometimes it happens when customer unwilling to look at the problem from their application end and blame on server, in that case issues continue to happen as nothing is changed in terms of server resource usage.
All Linux servers are similar, HFW, Arvixe, HG or other company, setups are pretty identical, what is different is customer's script, loads and resource usage.
Hope that helps. Should you have any questions please contact me directly at max @ hostforweb.com

I guess its different for everyone depending on setup and other circumstance.

Ive  had dedicated server with HFW for a few years now and has been fine.

Several Dolphin sites running, some good traffic at times, no problems.

I'm always amazed at how little time people spend searching for their problem before posting.

I'd agree BUT, the hosting company KNEW about Dolphin and claimed EXPERIENCE with Dolphin and advertises on the basis of ..."Not to worry, your OK with us Hosting Dolphin.. look at all the bells and whistles we provide to make your Dolphin site run well.  What they did to that man was pure BS.

I am here checking out Andrews recommended hosts..(not for Dolphin as a lot of us older folks would eat cat food if we allotted that  money to a CMS...   but)   for several Vet and PoW/MIA groups, and plan to move my domains where ever I place them..  I am in the google stage, BBB, etc.....     a big microscope will be used now before hostforweb is chosen..  most of the folks involved with the groups I will be moving are over 60... hardened combat vets or relatives and people who really don't need deceptive trade practices that will create a HORROR experience for them  One group
is one of the most respected in the US Vet community ....

Chairman, M S., recipient of the Viêtnow, "Endurance Award / Lifetime Commitment" Award, May 18, 2013 in Branson, MO.

They are also honorary members of the Special Ops community...

I made ONE mistake ( as I just moved them - which is a walk in the park for me - but not them ) and just put them on 247ZILLA ( hostzilla) who claims USA - Nevada  but is based in India.. and you won't believe how many times they have been down or "locked out" via IP block.   If I didn't know how to run a tracert -- and was not familiar with the web/internet .... I would have believed any thing they told me..  FTP kept timing out, then was locked.. ... so, despite, some hosts are nightmares in sheeps clothing... you think your gonna have a good snooze as you watch the sheep, but when your eyes close you find you just met  Satan incarnate..

(( ps: all my work within the vet community is volunteer - never charged - never will ))
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PS:  The item below was sent yesterday - - we will be on their servers 1 week Thursday.. thats how soon this stuff hit the fan
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last note from Mary
I recently moved my website to 247zilla from web.com. I did so based on referrals and comments from those that were used to working with your staff.

I have had nothing but trouble and heartache since I paid for hosting.

I am a 60 yr old Marine Corps widow. I can't tell a gig from a FTP. I use TWO I.T.  guys - one here in Missouri and one in TX. It is taking BOTH techs and HOURS on the phone with Cisco and Century Link to just get stuff working. I have lost over a week of email with my techs being locked out, failed authentications for my mail, blocked ports and your CHAT being down for over a week.

What can be done to resolve this so my guys can go back to work on my non-profit site.  I don't care how many times they have to FTP to get my site right - dang it LET THEM WORK ON MY SITE! Stop locking us out.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So if they are going to sing a song for Dolphin, and walk like sheep.. they need to... or be removed from the list.  Their poor habits will most certainly reflect on Boonex and Andrews software credibility

My two cents.. and be assured I enjoy my freedom to speak and express... this is not a for or against any person in this conference.. it is a heads up, be aware, listen to others before you take the time and your dime and invest it in what appears to be a great deal.  Both sides of the coin may have input that will end up saving you time, money and reputation.
