Friend Request Notification

Is simple messaging required for a user to be notified of a friend request.  Right now I can see the friend request, but the user I'm testing never received any notification.

I didn't install simple messaging because I didn't want the polling type of chat, but should I install it?

Bump - would like help before I install simple messaging an dprobably end up breaking 20 things lol.

SimpleMessange should not have anything to do with email notifications.

So they only get email notification.  I thought, if they were on, they would get a screen popup?  That seems to be what the link I posted indicates.

There is the new DHTML pop-up/growl thing but as far as I know it has nothing to do with Simple Messenger.  Is it enabled in the 'Advanced Settings' area?
