Lag with the video chat ???

I've gotten a few complaints from members in the last week about a "lag" in the video chat.  I've checked it out a few times, but haven't noticed anything.  However, I'm not in the chat for hours a day like some of these members.

I'm just wondering what could possibly be creating this "lag" with the video chat...

Is this an issue with the RMS I'm using?  Could it be something else?   Are these members just crazy?

Any help, advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

ps.  My site is hosted on a separate server than my RMS.  Could this be part of the problem?

I would naturally assume that the transfer of audio and video communication can be stressful on connections at times.

So you're saying that it is the RMS...

Just a curious question for anyone who might now:

Approximately how many members can be using audio and video simultaneously on a typical RMS (before it is likely to lag)?

JasonVan,

yes it could be the RMS, but it could also be your hosting. are you on a dedicated machine, VPS or shared? are there any chronological time-frames that the lags are noticed, would this coincided with peak time usage of the server, if this is a shared or VPS environment, or is this lag time noticed when it could possibly be peak usage for the other RMS users?

JasonVan, your inquiry about how many members can be using audio/video simultaneously is truly a loaded question, and unfortunately, there is no real answer, the reason for this is there are too many variables that we have to substitute X,

is the RMS server quad-core --> 12GB RAM, 100mbps stream, is the site hosted server of a stature that will withstand X streaming members?

wish you the best of luck in tracking down your problem.

Okay, I understand.  There are indeed a lot of variables.

Thanks.  I guess I will just need to investigate this issue more.

I'm on a VPS (only $50/month).  My RMS is located on a separate server, as I was scared to have them together on the same server.

I thought that if a lot of people were using their video and audio, it would cause the whole site to slow down for everybody else as well.

I have no problem spending more...on either the server for the site... or for the server for the RMS.  Or perhaps I could spend more and put them together on a Dedicated server.  I just don't know a lot about running a dedicated server, or what  I would need to accommodate my growing needs.

I did move my site to a $100/month VPS a few months ago (with a different company), only to find it was even slower than the previous one.  I moved it back.  It's not the money I was worried about.  I'm just plain fanatical about speed.

Dolphin 7 is a slow running script no matter where you put it, so finding the absolute fastest server really is critical.
