In advanced settings - profiles - at bottom you can select to show either avatar or profile photo in place of normal avatar and members thumbnail image.
I selected to show profile pic and un-installed the avatar module, gets rid of the whole process of creating an avatar!
Automatically adds profile image when you upload one :-)
