Suppose I start with a 400 day license. And before it expires I want to upgrade to life time permanent license, would I pay the difference, which is 500, or a full 790 dollars?

I recommend starting with the FREE version. Trust the icons and ads are very classy and does NOT take away from the concept/act of styling your community. And it's FREE. Did I tell you its FREE.

Then you can just worry about hosting and server costs like the rest of Us :)
