i domn't know how.. but they managed to use smtp... and my site specifically only goes through outgoing mail.
I block the ip with the firewall.. i just would like to send a letter to whoever was spamming.
all i need is thier user id and ip address if it matches. good. they get a warning letter

If you were able to resolve the issue by blocking the IP from the firewall, you might be better off just leaving it at that. I would hate to see you send a 'warning' letter just for you to wake up one morning and find your site completely hacked up.
If they have never 'logged' into your site, then it would be had to find an IP related to the user. If they have, the IP address of the user can possibly be found by going to Admin Panel> Tools> IP Blacklist and look at the bottom of that page and you will see 'Stored Logged Member IP Addresses' (if you have that enabled). Click through that to see if you can find the IP address of the user.

Hi,
although I do agree with Zarcon, it may be helpful to find the IP for other purposes, so you may want to try Deanos Tool's, which is a great free mod, with lots of other uses beyond that...

On our site, potential users must first sign up, then only after they confirm their email AND after we check their profile to ensure they are not spammers do we allow them to become a user. If the potential user is a spammer, we delete them immediately and they never become a user (it doesn't do a bit of good to ban them as that level of ban is based on email address and the same IP has hundreds of email addresses they use)..
The problem: since they never logged in as a user, but did sign up and started their profle, we are unable to get their IP Address in the IP Blacklist in order to ban their IP. We therefore have to repeatedly ban the same people over and over.
Any solution?
Thanks, Ella

The IP of someone visiting your site is always available the instant they hit your server. If you're serious about getting their IP, it would be in the logs.
Having said that, running a proxy to spoof IP's has been a hacker favorite for a very long time

You can try installing Deanos Tools 1.8.3
It has a feature called: IP Address Log
This feature should provide you with Member's/Guest's IPs.
