Write Tutorials - Help Community - Get Paid! (updated)

Andrew Boon posted 11th of November 2010 in Dolphin.pro News. 26 comments.

We are on the mission to create a very solid documentation base for Dolphin and now we ask for your help again. If you feel confident about any Dolphin-related subject and ready to share your knowledge with Unity members, please consider writing a Tutorial at BoonEx Trac.

We will review your submissions and will reward solid, quality works in a few ways:

- by paying money. Depending on quality and community feedback it may be somewhere around $100-300 per tutorial. You would also be featured as the author of the tutorial and would be allowed to place a link to your site in your Author signature. Thus, it is a promotion opportunity, too.

- by promoting you and your site on the Tutorial page. You would be featured as the author of the tutorial and would be allowed to place a link to your site in your Author signature.

by featuring your work in Newsletter and Blogs. Your tutorial will be announced in BoonEx Blog and BoonEx Newsletter, thus promoting you and your site even more.

- by giving Premium Membership. Authors of good Tutorials may be given a free Unity Premium Membership or extra period of their current Premium Membership.

- we are also happy to negotiate any other reward for worthy works.

Note, however, that lesser quality may mean that your work would be pulled. So, feel free to discuss (at uno@boonex.com) your ideas and progress with us. We're happy to collaborate on your Tutorials.

What Constitutes a Good Tutorial

The quality and usefulness would be for the most part determined by BoonEx and by community feedback. Generally we expect a digestible volume of text and screenshots that one can read and make use of within a few hours. So, it may be 200 words or 2000 words, or 20,000 words, but those words must be really useful.

It must be in English. Sorry for language intolerance, but we can only facilitate internal and community evaluation of English texts.

It must be properly formatted in BoonEx Trac Wiki. It's not a hard thing to learn.

Some Ideas

Just to kick-start your imagination, some ideas on Tutorials we'd be interested in:

1. How to build an online dating site using Dolphin.

2. How to build a matchmaking site using Dolphin.

3. Make money with Dolphin - monetization tips.

4. Advertising and marketing your new community site.

5. Promote your community: white-hat SEO practices and Dolphin.

6. Staying lean - picking right Dolphin modules for your community, social network or dating site.

7. Dolphin copyrighting advice.

8. Dolphin localisation - things to consider when deploying for ... (Chinese, Indian, German, Russian, etc) market.

9. What you see is what you get - Dolphin design and visuals - tips and advice.

10. Managing your social network, community or dating site - tips and tricks.

11. Combating SPAM and SCAM - things that work.

12. Most effective and least obtrusive ways to contact BoonEx team and get support.

Think about it... a good tutorial may be written within a few hours, and may be a good opportunity and a great help for the community and BoonEx.

realy nice my Friend and very TOP
love this idea. we should see a lot of good tutorials now with this kind of system.
Nathan Paton
This looks more like hiring someone to do what you should be doing and just using the idea of a promotion as an attempt to hide this fact. Just an observation, of course.
Andrew Boon
Well, we do this thing too, as you may see - we're adding new tutorials, but we want to have more of them and we want to cover broader scope of subjects, including those we're not familiar with (like localization techniques).
Nathan Paton
Of course, it's also possible that I'm just jealous since I can't write a tutorial if my life depended on it. I wonder if I can outsource the documentation writing to a factory overseas and still pocket the money.

I already know that I am stupid but maybe I am blind too... I cannot find how to create a new page in Wiki ???

If I'd be only better in English. ...

Anyway, I have another suggestion. Why not make an announced live cast (once a month) where people can actively join and discuss and maybe all with supporting video clips (10 minutes is enough per theme)? Keep it it online for reference. I think that would create a lot of attraction and all the tools Boonex is famous for (like chat), could be brought in.

Here is one of the most impressive presentation-technic that gives people in 10 minutes more info that see more sticks than endless texts.

Just was talking about this with a friend of mine who's brother is a cartoonist. They liked it right away.

Videos like that are quite time-consuming and require some special talent/experience, which we lack :( We should perhaps look into outsourcing that when budget allows.
cbassthefish
Sounds good. You may want to think about creating categories/sub-categories where the tutorials section is, on the main Wiki page. Otherwise, over time things may get messy. For instance something like this:
Development
------Extension Development
------Template Development
------Ad-hoc Development
------Coding Practices
------>----JavaScript
------>----PHP
------>----HTML
Learning
------How to set up an online dating site using Dolphin.
------How to build a matchmaking site see more using Dolphin.
------Dolphin copyrighting advice.
------What you see is what you get - Dolphin design and visuals - tips and advice.
------Managing your social network, community or dating site - tips and tricks.
Marketing
------Make money with Dolphin - monetization tips.
------Advertising and marketing your new community site.
------Promote your community: white-hat SEO practices and Dolphin.
Quality
------Staying lean - picking right Dolphin modules for your community, social network or dating site.
Research
------Most effective and least obtrusive ways to contact BoonEx team and get support. :P
Technical
------Dolphin localisation - things to consider when deploying for ... (Chinese, Indian, German, Russian, etc) market.
------Combating SPAM and SCAM - things that work.
Miscellaneous
Andrew Boon
Sure, once we get more of them, we'll add structure.
cbassthefish
When I say separate "categories" I mean to say that the examples I have given of Development, Learning, Marketing, Quality, Research, Technical and Miscellaneous should all be represented by a separate Wiki page.

3. Click "Create this page" button and start writing.

If we do not want money, we can get a license?
Andrew Boon
Sure. We are happy to negotiate this. Just show us the work ;)
mods4dolphin
Very nice and solid idea, will certainly help take Boonex to the next level...
I have already started thinking what should I write on...
Zarcon
Hey.. what about my "Troubleshooting" and "How To" Stickys I have written on the Dolphin 7 forums??? I should get some big bucks for that :) or at least a t-shirt :P
Andrew Boon
Form some tutorials from them and "at least a t-shirt" will be on its way ;)
hd4real
How about adding my post http://www.boonex.com/unity/forums/#topic/Tutorial-with-images-Creating-a-profile-field.htm to How to section
Andrew Boon
Sure, look at the comments, update and add it.
Zarcon
Ok - I am a newbie at Wiki, So I created a wiki page like you said, however I do not see the link to it under "Community Tutorials" on this page http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/wiki/Dolphin7Docs. I can see it if I click index though..

This is the page I created: http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/wiki/TutorialCronJobSetup

So why don't I see it under Community Tutorials like the others? Am I missing something?
mrpowless
I made a tutorial today for the people who want their site emails to be whitelisted.
http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/wiki/TutorialTweakingSpamFilters

I added your link to the main page Zarcon... you just edit the page where you see the links and copy the bottom one and put your url and title in there.
Zarcon
Thanks mrpowless. I appreciate the help :)

So Andrew.. Where is my shirt??? :)
cbassthefish
Well done mrpowless and Zaron. I was hoping to see more tutorials 7 days after this blog entry was posted... Obviously no one wants Boonex's money, just their T-Shirts :o(
theguypc
I don't think non-premium members are able to post tutorials.

I've followed the instructions to create a new page and couldn't do it. I'm only an advanced member so I assume that is the issue.
Zarcon
@ cbassthefish Actually, if given the option... I would rather have a License than a T-Shirt. :)
