I have the same issue on my site as well as on this site. It has told me I have 1 message for a long long long time and through the upgrades as well, and is still there..lol
Update: I was checking my trash bend on this site and I have messages in trash from 2008 and there is no way to delete it all. This does not effect me but as a webmaster this does not make sense as it is taking up space on your server that it does not need to.
