BSOD!

Wow! I haven't seen one of these in a while! The dreaded BSOD! (Blue screen of death!)

  1. Upload a video that is beyond the servers set limits (in this case, 152 meg .wmv file with a 100 meg server limit)
  2. Video upload times out and you get a funky split screen that includes part of the subscription signup screen (previous post http://www.boonex.com/unity/forums/forum/Dolphin-Betas-And-RCs-0.htm#topic/Video-Upload-Error-Subscription-Screen.htm )
  3. Click on any link in the browser and the browser locks up tight.
  4. Try and CAD out and get an application error with each attempt.
  5. After several tries, get the task manager open. Try and close the browser, more application errors.
  6. Finally succeed at getting it closed and POOF, you get the dreaded BSOD screen.
  7. COLD BOOT recovers the machine.

I can repeat this at will. I am using IE8 with Windows XP PRO with all the latest updates.

An issue with your computer.

Damm Internet Explorer! Time to upgrade to Firefox

If your desktop computer can't handle an error on a site and it crashes  than it's your OS or Internet Browser fault

Sorry if you disagree Sky but the issue is your browser/computer being able to handle whatever error is thrown.  I know for a fact that IE has many issues with dolphin and I see errors every time I test with IE.  However, I have never had my computer crashed because it couldn't handle it.

I would have to agree with maruicecano on this one. If you are trying to "push" your computer to the limits, be ready to suffer from what may happen. You are consistently sending commands to the computer when browsing, uploading, hitting CAD, while the system is trying to recover from an error with upload limits. Not to mention that you have at least 25+ processes running  in order for windows to operate.

The computer will eventually stop responding when it has exhausted all of its resources and the kernel becomes unstable. The computer has no choice but to force you to stop, giving you a BSOD.

Nothing to see here

I understand what you are all saying and you are right. I also agree that it's partially the browsers fault. It is also the video upload system that is ill designed and not completely thought out. In a lot of situations, there is no way out other than the cad or just hammering it till it fails and in some cases, the old cold boot. I set upon you all the steps I took to create the situation.

The point is this. You CANNOT expect everyone to switch to ff. They just won't do it and to make that the "fix" is not acceptable. The upload does not know what to do when it reaches an impass, ie, a server limit, a timeout, etc. it just hangs with no where to go. My computer does not have any flaws that are not found in everyone else's system that uses Gates crap and like it or not, the situation really needs to be dealt with.

  1. Make the progress bar keep time with the actual upload progress.
  2. Make the upload actually quit trying when it reaches an impass.
  3. Show the limits to the user on what is allowed and what is not as far as file size and type. This step alone will eliminate 75% of your failures.
  4. Think the entire process through before you write the scripts in the first place? It's called planning.

I agree that there should be a warning when trying to upload something that exceeds the allowed upload.  However, you need to update your computer its too old if crashing by giong to a social network Laughing

I have an office full of computers. This particular one is less than 2 months old. I can recreate it on every computer in my office. It's NOT the computer.

screenshots or it didn't happen :)

Edit: I tried recreating this error on 5 different machines and nothing came close to creating a BSOD.  The issue is your local machine.  You likely have some addon running that is creating the conflict.  I can create the split screen issue with the login/subscribe as I've reported on that issue.  However nothing I do after that point will lock any of my machines.

Ok, I will create it but I have to warn you, I can give you everything except the BSOD. Screen capture just doesn't work very good under that situation. Maybe I can take a photo of it with my blackberry and email it to you, LOL

The reality is, you cannot do a screen cap when the system locks up and the only out of whack screen you can cap has already been posted by me (the partial subscription page in the video upload page).
