D7 stability, speed vs many modules

Hi guys.... after a months of testing dolphin 7 and exploring commercial modules I end up with following conclusion: To suit my needs and idea for my project I need D7, 23 free market modules and 35 market paid modules. This will cost me a fortune but thats another thing...

Main thing is how stable, reliable and fast will be D7 with total of 58 modules installed ? I even cant imagine how slow and paintfull will be every dolphin core upgrade process - with 58 modules it will be really paintfull process.

How many modules u have guys installed at average ? Maybe Im just an real extreme example if I want install 58 modules ? Please share some experience or recommendations with me ...

thanks in advance

Dave

Generally, when you start doing a lot of modifications to your site, you stop at that revision, as yes, it is too much of a pain to do upgrades.

Also, if you will be tacking on so much stuff to Dolphin, and/or doing a lot of your own modifications, you should consider your own Subversion (SVN) repository to keep all the code changes tracked.

All I can say is good luck...your talking a whole lot of headaches and heartaches with that many mods...first of all you are constantly dealing with the issues that Dolphin 7.2 presents (remember it is opensource), add to that any issue with the mods...most of the developers slap up mods and say they are compatible with the latest version of Dolphin and low and behold they are not...every mod usually causes some kind of issue with your site...also understand that for every Dolphin upgrade if the mod is not upgraded with it you will be presented with more issues and things to fix.  Now I'm not a techie I have a few working for me but I can tell you the last 3 years of dealing with Dolphin has been the worst roller coaster ride I have ever been on(I abhor roller coasters just an FYI).

So in closing BUCKLE UP BABY IT'S GOING TO BE A ROUGH RIDE!

After you really get your hands on those mods, you will realize most of them are unnecessary.

i think it was mentioned already, but once you mod a site that heavily, you basically get locked into that version. it was also suggested that you setup SVN when utilizing such a drastic variance in the source as not all of these mods are going to be written Dolphin 7 compliant, and you will have to modify your source code.

now to answer your question in relation to speed with any substantial number of mods, generally the mod itself does not slow down the site. What would need to be discussed is what is you setup now, are you on a shared hosting account, VPS, or Dedicated ?are you setup on a dynamic cluster, are you on cloud hosting. these are necessary evils that have to be considered, is your actual backbone, what are you planning on running this site from?

Hello Dosdauwg

Yes Im aware I will be basically sticked with current dolphin core version I install because upgrading that havily modded site will be reaaaallly paintfull. Thats why I bascially waiting over year to see stable version of D7 with most of errors fixed and in meantime I was playing with d 7.0.0. Im waiting to 7.0.3 to install and go live. Initially I wanted wait to 7.1 but as there is too many new features - they bring heaps of new errors that will be solving for months ...so this way I will wait forever :-) so I think I stick with 7.0.3. I already. I alsom opened thread here asking boonex staff why they dont move already done tasks in 7.1 to 7.0.3 and also why they dont move all tasks marked "defect" to 7.0.3 so we will have stable and good 7.0.3. Andrew answered that that what they planning to do ...so hopefully they really do that.

Im now testing on hostgator shared - after some minimal tweaks dolphin runs pretty well there but of course with some more active members I know I will be forced to move at least to VPS or dedicated server. Thats another thing - so far joombyte.com seems like my favourite hosting so far but the problem I have I dont know about those guys anything - who they are, how reliable they are, isnt there a risk they go bancrupt or something like that, isnt that hosting just one man show ? I dont mind small companies but than if service is heavily dependent just to one or two persons what happen if something happen to that persons...my site will be prolly lost if I dont doi my own backups like every day or week...

I done quite extensive research on mods I need - I dont want anything useless ... Im talking on mods like access control, fundraiser, extended events, facebook/twitter RPX, deano tools, youtube vide etc... so nothing useless but if I count I end up with really high numbers :-)

Creating my own subversion is prolly way I will end up but problem is Im not a programmer - I would call myslef highly conputer/web/internet educated person in role of very experienced project manager - so I can asaamble computers, I can edit flash files, I can edit databases, I can edit php ( if I know what to edit) etc... but Im not a programmer :-( so I would need some good programmer cooperation - which is now a little prob cause Im working on non-commercial project so it means not enough money to pay somebody some good or at least average money - and as I know most of good programmers have rates like 25-80 usd/hour ... if I pay that money I will  prolly eat grass instead of realy food :-). So my own SVN is the way only if I will have some programmer I cant afford now ... so have to think over how continue with my project..

ANyway thank for your thoughts Dos...
