Which files would I need to alter in order to change the background of the home page and perhaps the colors?

Depends on what all you are trying to do but assuming the default dolphin template then many things can be changed in:

templates/tmpl_uni/css/general.css

From background colors, to block colors, links, hovers, underlines, mouse overs you name it. I'd start looking at it first.

also follow up with mrpowless he has some browser utility that will allow you to mouse over anything on the site and it will identify the class that needs to be modded on the css~

i have not used it personally, but he has some raves about it somewhere on here.
