Hostgator wants $130 for Dolphin Requirement

I saw hostgator on boonex hosting page so i bought vps from there and they want $130 for boonex requirement. But according to boonex hosting page http://www.boonex.com/hosting.

BoonEx Certified Hosting Providers

Our certification program takes participating hosting providers to the next level of Dolphin compatibility. We regularly audit BoonEx Certified Hosting Providers (BCHPs) to ensure the best possible performance of hosting accounts offered for Dolphin. BCHPs are notified about versions updates in advance, and we collaborate in infrastructure updates to ensure smooth operation of Dolphin-based sites. BCHPs are required not only to adhere toDolphin system requirements but also implement our Server Setup Recommendations.

So why they want extra $130 and they told you this once you bought vps.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting HostGator.

We would be glad to install these on the VPS. The installation of this software would be $130 and would include the Dolphin installation as well as the FFmpeg software.

Please let us know if you are okay with the $130 installation charge so that we can continue with your request. Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best regards,

The charge is for installation of Dolphin. Apparently you asked them if they would install it. And they said they would for $130.

So it has nothing to do with requirements. Requirements just means the server meets the requirements to run dolphin as per this. http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/wiki/DolTech

It does not include installing it for you. If you want to save the $130. Install it yourself.

i asked for "Dolphin Hosting Requirements"

and just an FYI, they are going to charge you to configure the server to run dolphin on a VPS. though i have not looked into this deeply, i would presume that the advert only pertains to the shared hosting. so when you get a VPS, there are or should be two options, managed and non-managed, non-managed is default, and the least expensive.

so you need to understand what you were purchasing.

need the server configured and optimized for dolphin, you can get them to do it for whatever price they quote you at, or hit me or dolphin_jay up, and we are specialists in dolphin hosting, not just hosting dolphin.

hostgator have managed vps only.

I saw hostgator on boonex hosting page then i bought.

that is really surprising they want $130 to configure the server to run dolphin on a VPS.

they have 45 day refund period so not a big issue. But only surprise with that extra fees.

$130 isn't cheap but it's not terrible for an installation fee. There is a lot of initial configuration required on a brand new VPS (php, apache, mysql config, setting up nameservers etc), then throw D7 on top of it with its specific php requirements & ffmpeg configuration.

As far as VPS month to month costs, I'm running a D7instance just fine on their lowest (unmanaged) VPS plan @ $20/month. All you get with this is the parallels control panel for your VPS container, no WHMCS control panel etc.

What is with HostGator and their obsession with thinking FFmpeg is a requirement for Dolphin?  It's included with the script; it doesn't need to be installed on the system to work.  Just allow file execution and run it with Cron. For example, Media Temple didn't have FFmpeg on their shared servers, but executing a self-compiled binary via Cron worked (and that's how Dolphin's FFmpeg is supposed to work).

They must explicitly deny it on their reseller accounts then, as FFMPEG would absolutely not work there for me. Shame really, it was a decent way to quickly stand up a bunch of test sites & have a management interface - didn't cost that much either.

I ditched my reseller account for another VPS through them, every thing is happy now as far as video processing is concerned.

Reseller is a form of shared hosting, so that restriction makes sense (for them).  I know Dolphin can be difficult on shared, but some hosts have managed to create decent configurations or set aside entire servers for Dolphin.  But it's their choice to restrict shared, so long as people aren't being mislead - and last time I checked the hosting page here...

If it's some sort of help you need, you aren't going to get it by bumping an irrelevant topic that is over 3 years old.  The title of this topic is: "Hostgator wants $130 for Dolphin Requirement" .... how on earth does that apply to any help you may need?

My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees.

Dolphin certainly runs on a VPS. If you send me a PM, I can check over your server and make sure it meets requirements, and install it for you.

As for this thread, I've locked it due to old age. Please open a new thread if you still need help.
