Sorry, but we also don't allow our shared to be used for remote backups, and FTP backup service is limited to dedicated orders.

Just curious, why would you go remote.  When you can just do it on your own. Filezilla FTP is  free and even a external hard drive is $60. Thats if you do not have the space on your existing drive.

Ftp clients like filezilla allow you to do both upload and download. It may depend on how big your backups are though and whether they are compressed gzip or similar. One large gzip file will download faster than ten thousand individual files. This would also depend on how fast your internet connection is. If your backup is fairly large it can take a while.

For free or fairly cheap depending on how much space you need, and if you don't mind storing backups in a cloud service there are several out there. Google Drive, Dropbox, and many more. Getting a backup from your server/hosting account to one of these can be confusing for larger backups, but they are doable.

Hmm I didnt know filezilla let you do both, going to try that. I wanting to store backups of my 2 boonex sites which both are 30 plus gigs. I use dropbox all the time but it will not allow you to ftp into it, I need to be able to ftp so I can have cpanel do the back up and store it remotely for me.

lol I know I just checked,, man there has to be something simple and easy,, all I want is about 50 gigs or so that i can send backup tars to once a week.. I cant believe all them "unlimited" shared hosting plans wont allow this, cause that would had been perfect I think,, don’t see what else them slow shared hosting plans could ever be really used for, well cept designing a site before you launch it I guess.

They don't because they can't make any $ from it. They want bandwidth being used for HTTP and a website so they can cash in on 404 pages and then eventually traffic from sites that close.

This would also depend on how fast your internet connection is.

 Tommy, big point here.

Your on DSL and would not be a reliable way to pull all your sites down.

There are plenty of cloud storage offerings if you are interested in a remote storage.  Kim Dotcom just recently started up a new cloud storage offering with a lot of storage for members and it is encrypted storage.

What type of hosting do you currently have?  You can set up a cron job to run that will archive your site to a zip file and then use secure copy to transfer it from one server to another.

If you do a bit of searching, I bet you can find some information on remote backups without paying a lot.  In your case you might could just rent a small dedicated server just for your backups; for this you don't need a thoroughbred race horse.  I have seen dedicated for $38/month; not enough for running a Dolphin site but perfect for a remote cloud storage server.

I currently manually backup my sites, zip up the files, download to my computer and stored on a local drive; terrabyte drives are not very expensive and you can have a local raid storage to ensure safe backups.  You really only need to archive the members' files, so it is not like you have to grab the entire site; you can do that once, then update the backup of the members' content as well as the database.

Geeks, making the world a better place

well what i ended up doing was just letting the server do the backup and ftp the files to my desktop here.. didnt really want to do that cause it takes like HOURS to pull the whole file down and i hate wasting electricity like that,, so bought a fan control and set my fans low as i can get them.. then have all the displays go off and let it pretty much run in sleep mode while the server ftps the backup to my desktop,, then in the morning i copy it to a huge thumb drive i have so i have a double copy.. i used filezillas ftp server program in case anyone else is wanting to do this.. i was certain some shared hosting would had popped up and sold me a little storage but it did not happen

if you know Linux, you can use Rsync with a simple backup script to send the backup file to any server, and it does not require alot of space because you only copy the changes to the backup server.

Example: you have 100 GB on your site, first time backup will be 100GB copied to the backup server, after that if something changes on the production server, let's say you add a video on the production server in the size of 1 GB, then only that 1GB is copied to the backup server which is now = 101GB .

Wish we (Zarconia) could help you with that. I can say that I have used SiteVault before and it works very well and not very expensive at all. The use to have a software package for 1 domain/1 database for $19 a while back but now looks like the cheapest is a 5 domain package for $39 which still isn't bad. If you have the storage on your home PC for incremental backups, then its great.

Oh and the prices are a 1 time fee.

Of course there are the others listed here as well.

Nothing to see here

I use Site Vault for Back up also Quick=1 hr. Schedule when you want it to happen 4am or whenever. Reports any errors or abnormalities which are typically images that are too large or error files that should be purged. You can have it back up to your desktop or to the site. I have had no need to do a restore yet, so can not tell you how easy, but it looks like one click.

I was using Filezilla at first and 5 gigs was taking hours also. Site Vault definitely better choice. I am getting smarter as time goes on.
