I have come up with a solution to this if your wanting to use it.

You will have to edit the database to do this, if your not comfortable with it I can help further.

You do realize there are already social links built into the share button in the action menu right?

This works great and I like the idea that the addthis block is out in the open where people can see it.

NOW, can we get this working on a reasonable level within the forums? It's like I'm beating my head against the wall. Maybe someone needs to build a mod to make it work but I would LOVE it if my members could share posts with photos and videos in them to Facebook and the other sites.

It works on a frew photos but mostly doesn't work on any of the others.

try that link, it works. The reason for the #.UR5MNZNaFSE.gmail is for other reasons I won't go into in this post.

Now, my very poliutely created response (with proper compressed images) to prove my point.

I have the block installed just as you did it. I opted for a few more selections but essentially the same, installed in the DB.

When you click the FB link (or any other) it opens in a popup like it should but as usual, there is no content. Like this:

That's been my main issue forever. You cannot permalink in the photo mod so your screwed. If you're in the forum, you can permalink it, which removes the # character, then the content makes it into the box. No photos or videos however, just text.

Now, the comment that the share button that is in the action block is just a like link, that's also incorrect. Also, the action block share does NOT open a popup, but a new page. Like So:

And if you look closely at the URL, you will see the offending # in the URL

So ... Where does that leave us now?

Ok, almost. I already posted in another link that some of the images pop, like the one you used above. Did you try the image I selected? It does NOT pop and in fact, because the image fails to 'thumb' the entire content of the share is dumped in favor of the base link.

None of the images pop in the forums so I removed the addthis code. In the forums, you have the ability to permalink a post. Permalinking it causes the # tag to disappear and the text is then posted but the image does NOT make it into the share at all within the forums. I will add it back in so it can be tested as well.

We're getting there. Also, I discovered why the popup wasn't working. The browser was set to open popups in a separate tab. What's funny is the Facebook is the only one that opened in a tab, all the others opened in a popup.

So now, we have some possible browser conflicts determined by the settings and we have some image issues that may have something to do with their size or their extension, not sure which..

Still doesn't work like it should.

Tested in the latest IE as well as Firefox (not beta). Don't use chrome. Got enough Google shit in my life now...

Here's a thought. There is already a table in the DB called sys_shared_sites. This is the table that populates the share button with the different share links.

Wouldn't it be possible to just delete all of these and create one addthis or sharethis entry instead?

Let me ask this; would there be a difference from being logged in as admin?  Newton would just be a visitor to the site or a regular member of the site?  Is it possible that is where some of the issues are being created?

i have added the external sharing buttons right below the rating stars..it is more convenient for the users.

i know this is old, but this is probably the best thread i have found regarding this. I have tried the suggested change in database and still not getting any image. when I debug it in facebook developers - it says the og tag is missing, but then also displays all of the images from the page. But, when I post the link in a message to another user - at least a random image comes up - not the one selected as the thumbnail, though.
