Dolphin 7.0.1 and Unity update. Not an April Fools joke (hopefully).

Andrew Boon posted 1st of April 2010 in . 40 comments.

Right now we spend most of the time on 2 things - Dolphin 7.0.1 and the next set of Unity updates. I'd like to share some details with you to make sure the community is informed on what's to come.

Dolphin 7.0.1

We're preparing a beta version now. It's just a "service update", but the amount of addressed issues warrants the need for at least one beta run. Tuesday next week is likely to be the date for the beta.

Along with published tickets we are improving Dolphin in terms of security again. Second round of security audit is passed and we're working on the report.

Unity

Mostly based on your feedback we are preparing a range of Unity updates. Take a look at what's planned:

Forums

- Post editing/deletion to be allowed only for 5 minutes after submission.

- Remove redundant AJAX features and unnecessary notifications.

- Move "Post" form to the bottom to see your own message once it's posted.

- Show Unity member menu in Forums.

- Improved Spy.

- Signatures.

Market

- Jobs to receive it's own sections again, same as Market, Forums, Blogs, etc. Extended and Premium members will be able to post in Jobs.

- Market listings will be displayed more according to members/vendors reputation. We're improving the reputation/ratings as well. Falling/rising graphs considered.

- More prominent "Reports" display with warnings

Websites

- Current automated system seems to be a failed experiment. So, (inhale-exhale-inhale) all currently registered "websites" will be removed and instead we'll provide a directory-like service. Extended and Premium members will be able to submit their Dolphin/BoonEx related sites for a free review. Websites will be displayed only after admin review. Websites don't have to be Dolphin-based, but have to be related to BoonEx somehow. There won't be any automated data pulling, maybe just a custom RSS. Website listing will only include a screenshot, title, url and description. Opinions and ratings will remain.

- We're cutting off submission to Websites from Dolphin 7.0.1 license registration process.

Blogs

- Some improvements in comments, such as anti-double-post, more comments per page, etc.

- More "recommended" tags in "Post" form.

Welcome Page

- We're adding a big, highly visible "Welcome" page explaining newcomers everything about Unity terms, memberships, market, jobs, etc.

Unity Spy

- A Unity-wide tracker of current activity, similar to forum spy, but covering all modules, including Blogs, Market, comments, ratings, websites, forum, etc.

Moderation/Reports/Administration

- "Hide" function for all types of content (including separate comments) for moderators, with obligatory "comment".

- Reports list visible to moderators to hide reported problematic content quickly.

- Obligatory "comment" for reports.

- 3 strikes policy for account cancellation.

- 1 week and 1 month account suspension when needed.

Terms

- Current Terms will be updated according to the new changes.

Favorites

- Links-saving tool.

General

- Search system.

- Mailbox imrpovements.

- Email notifications with settings.

- FInally, a Trident Blog.

- Agent changing for Premium members.

- I'm thinking about adding a chat and IM, but not sure yet. Comments welcome.

There're some other things, like bug-fixes and minor changes, etc. Unity updates will be rolled-out step-by-step, and will start happening after Dolphin 7.0.1 release.

And where is the search function for members, market ....???
Only Tag-Searching is very horrible!!!
Andrew Boon
I listed a "search system" - it's a bit early to tell much about it, but that's exactly what you're talking about.

1. Please fix facebook bug. My previous FBConnect stopped working sometime before. Otherwise we prefer integration with RPXNow.com

2. We would be more happy if you will be adding a banner-link exchange system to make networking more powerful.

3. Banner ad placement for advertiser will be also helpful to make dolphin community sites generate income.

4. Please add other options other than PayPal for payment system.

Thank you.

5. Please help and provide a powerful SEO tools to make our sites more searcheable in yahoo and google.

Extended? Is this a new membership type or is it Advanced?
Will Extended members be able to post jobs free?

Great list Andrew, just a couple suggestons:

1. Can the post/edit function be for 1 hour. Most posts can do with a 5 minute rule, but since alot of our stuff is technical we might not find the error in the post within 5 minutes, but rather not until someone else points it out. This would allow the techie posts to be edited still for a full hour and hopefully not confuse the newbies when we drop a mistake into a post. I know, many of us are coding heroes here, but even coding heroes make typos.

2. see more Signatures: Either we don't have them or they have limits as to what can be on them. This is just going to turn into a huge spam tool by some (specifically the spammers that hit & run the forums) so some guidelines on what can be in them would be a great thing.

3. Clean up of reports. Some individuals took alot of negative comments on their profiles due to a few profiles by a certain hit & run individual who has since been banned we understand, can we get all of those cleaned up to as it's just hurting the reputations of reputable people otherwise. (Not saying who it was, Uno knows who we're talking about here.)

4. Allow some of the more senior members to become Agents upon proof of their knowledge/skill base. People like HL, DD, CT, Magnasoft, Zarcon and so on contribute a great deal. Perhaps an incentive to them also for the great work they do if they become an Agent. This can greatly enhance the turn time on many issues surrounding Unity as it will help to place Agents in the same Time Zone as the customers. I'm sure a few here would be happy to consider doing this to help out.

5. Account Suspensions. I might as well just head off to banned camp right now. I got my fishin' pole, my tent, my sleepin' bag, canteen, lantern and who knows, maybe I'll get a few friends to hang out with while I'm there. LOL
Zarcon
Thanks for the updates Andrew. I also have a suggestion:

- To refrain from going through betas on upgrades, release the updates more frequently. If you want to limit your tickets to like 50 per update/version, then do so. I would rather do several "smaller" updates than to attempt a extremely large one that could cause more harm than good.

- Some of the "reported" members, mail, etc are really old. Maybe you can do a "One-Time" forgiveness and clear all reports see more so that Moderators can keep track of the most recent reports and respond appropriately.

Keep up the good work.

Chris
CALTRADE
So let me understand this. Sometime next week there will be a D7.01 beta. Does this mean that later there will be a D7.01? If so, there will be an upgrade script from D7.01 beta to D7.01 correct? In my opinion, it doesn't matter a bit what you call it - our members will never know and most of us only care about the feature set and bugs. There is still that fairly serious issue with the inability to "null" a multiple select field (see disputes section - incorrectly labeled as "fixed") see more that I would love to see fixed in this version - it affects both the join form and the search functions. I generally agree with Zarcon - it would actually be easier to have smaller upgrades every two or three months.
Good to see things coming around Andrew. A few small steps at a time and eventually we'll have a very useful community.
theguypc
So we are probably looking at May if all things go well - correct? If not, then probably June or later?

I should have just installed 6.16 and been happy with that. This waiting stuff just never ends.
hd4real
I agree with CALTRADE. Not having "null" for multiple select fields is a mess because an answer always has to be selected. I am having problems too with this at my site.
houstonlively
PLEASE, PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE WITH SUGAR ON TOP......

Provide an upgrade package that contains ONLY the changed files. Why needlessly overwrite 4,000 + files with an identical copy? I've done this myself on every upgrade since RC3, so I know it's not overly difficult
hd4real
@HL

An upgrade package with only edited files would be great because it is a pain in the ass to have to go by all files to see whats changed so you can update it with your mods.
mydatery
I just had a huge light bulb go off CT, if you go over to HPOF.com they have exactly what your talking about on their Advanced Search. Yeah, you have to sign up for it to see this page I think (not positive) but it will show the page how I'm understanding you would like it for Multiple Select fields and that it does work or the value can be nulled.

I think they did this by setting the mandatory on the join pages but then disabling it on all other pages, including the search page. When the mandatory see more is killed on the search page then it works much better.

Question, not sure if it will work for you or not, but can you set the fields you want to "Mandatory" on your join page and then create a new set that is "Not Mandatory" on the Search page and have it run the search without selecting the "Not Selected" field? On POF.com's Advanced Search page it has a field for "Select" and then an option of None Selected before the list and you can choose everything on it or nothing. Check it out, it might be the best way to describe this if it's what your looking for. I'd suggest code stripping but the site is in asp not php so that probably won't work.

But it's a place to start your explanation.

Oh.. i thought it came out. okay umm great list but when? I totally agree with Zarcon. it's a good idea to break them up into smaller versions ... like 7.0.1a 7.0.1b stuff like that. I'm right in the middle of something and it's annoying. My site is acting strange lately so I think I should do a fresh install. I don't have a problem doing that but the problem is i'm not in the mood to install 246 fixes one by one all over again and at the same time, i don't want to wait too long for 7.0.1. see more It's driving me nuts! :-/
mauricecano
Are the support tickets assigned to Somebody going to be ignored in 7.0.1?
patrick81
Sorry I overlooked. It's Tuesday next week. I hope

Regarding the forums, I agree with the time-limit to delete posts, but feel a time-limit on editing posts to be too much. We should be able to edit our posts if we need to update any information we've posted, among other reasons.
mydatery
I think the time limit on edit has to do with something that I pointed out to Uno, Magna. When he edited some of my posts (not that any of them ever needed it, I'm such a polite poster all the time.) I noticed the edit button was still there, so I checked to see if I could edit what was moderated and sure enough I could. It'd be alot of coding to make it so we could edit our posts unless admin/moderator had edited them. This is actually a good thing as we will be more responsible for what we post. see more Just think we should be given more time since this is technical stuff here.

When will be available this update??? Does anybody know how much time it will take, because for now I'm very disapointed using this version of dolphin 7.0.0...((

I too think that smaller updates released more often would be easier to apply and diminish the need for yet another Beta. Many of us have been crying out for some major bug fixes for quite a while now..........and now we have to go through another Beta?

Please release a smaller version of 7.0.1! There are plenty of numbers left for you to use till you get to D8 :)

Looking forward to the changes to the Unity forum as that will hopefully help improve the functionality of our Orca forums.............something see more which has been desperately needed for a long time now.

Oh and would it be possible to get an upgrade patch that just makes the necessary changes without affecting EVERY SINGLE file?

And please tell me the software will now run smoothly in IE8!

Oh and Happy Easter!!!

Yes... small updates need to be released much more frequently. And major fixes should be ASAP!
Profesize
Why don't you guys release a 7.0.1 patch that contains bug fixes you are sure will work to avoid releasing another Beta and then at the same time release a 7.0.2 Beta with the bug fixes that do need testing?

It's a simple enough solution and will keep most people happy.
Profesize
Why don't you guys release a 7.0.1 patch that contains bug fixes you are SURE will work so that we may get started on fixing our sites NOW, then you can release a 7.0.2 Beta with the bug fixes that do need testing so as to be sure that the more major bug fixes do actually work?

It's a simple enough solution and will keep most people happy. Of course it will mean its a little bit work for you to release 2 updates but trust me when I say it will be worth it as by many of the above posts, it seems see more to be what your members actually want.

Hopefully you will consider this suggestion.
Profesize
How about more time as Mydatery suggests to edit posts so that you don't accidentally create two posts as the edit countdown ran out while you were editing?

Though as Magnassoft suggests also, it would also be handy to have the ability to edit our posts whenever we want.

Having a timer on the delete and edit function is kinda like saying you have freedom of speech...........but only for 5 minutes!!! :)
silverado350
It would be nice to see the market broken down into categories.

Example: Photos | Video/Sound | Communications | Templates | Integrations
SkyForum
Outstanding. Make me feel like we are finally moving....

A couple of observations.

1.) I do not understand the need to limit how long someone can edit their post. In the 7 years I have had an online community I have never had an issue that required that. I would find it intrusive. If you add that feature, please make sure we can turn it off.

2.) I disagree with Mydatery on the signatures. Signatures are only available to registered members. If you are having trouble with people using the see more signature feature to spam the index, might I suggest tighter controls over your membership requirements.

3.) Beta's are a pain in the ass. Release the updates more frequently so we can avoid them please?

I have a bunch more but will post them in a more appropriate place. Thank you for listening and providing us with this update.

lots of improvements are required for Dolphin7 to become the "ULTIMATE"
I hope Trident will not be a disappointment.

Hello Andrew

Could we please get a response regarding the seemingly popular desire to have an update of 7.0.1 released that is not a Beta? I realise its the Easter weekend but it would be great to hear something back by tomorrow please.

An update with fixes that you are sure do not need testing would be awesome as we could get rid of some major issues immediately. Please take into consideration that many of us have working sites with real members that are relying on us to fix these issues asap...........and see more in turn,we are relying on you.

No pressure....lol!
DeeEmm
Good luck with the release. It's good to see that there is a beta release, rather than simply releasing an update and hoping it is bug free. This might upset some, but it is the correct way to do things, especially with a release with so many modifications.

My comments regarding release cycles are in my blog, (http://www.boonex.com/unity/blog/entry/Product_release_cycles), so I will not repeat them here, but it might be worth considering that beta's do not necessarily have to be tested on the see more public. It might be advantageous to invite users into a beta test program and keep the beta versions away from public release. This has many advantages, most of which do not need explaining.

I'm sure that there are plenty of willing users here that would welcome to be a part of a beta test program - after all - they get to see all of the new features / fixes up front, ahead of the actual release, and get to contribute first hand to ensuring that the final release is bug free. Additionally, those not interested, get spared from having to install it.

With the beta program, once you have opted-in, you are automatically used for all future developments, including sneak peeks at test builds for future releases, D8 for example, for which they also get the opportunity to submit comments / suggestions / bug reports.

why are u still adding tickets to 7.01??..lets jjust get that closed now and released, save them for 7.02 or 7.1..you have thousands of people desperate for this release...our sites are live and we need these fixes asap please..:(
Profesize
Very true indeed.

The bugs in our sites make us look unprofessional and seemingly not in complete control due to a lack of action. Coming from our members stand-point, they just want the problems fixed and can't understand why there is such a delay.

There have been numerous requests to have updates released more often. Please release the update now so we can keep our members content.

And if there s a reason why you cannot release it then it wouldn't hurt to let us know by actually responding see more to a post on the occasion.

I would never leave my members waiting without some sort of response, and neither should the staff at Boonex.

Sorry if this post sounds like I am pissed off.......................but ...hey........I am getting there.

:)
silverado350
Well said Profesize, I have a ton of work to do but it is pointless to do anything until the update gets released.
deansyme
I understand the delay due to the difficuilties with members of the boonex team, hope all ok for u guys and look forward to your return, in the meantime I urge everyone to stop adding tickets to 7.01 and add them to 7.1 instead, then when they are back they can get 7.01 released and pick out ones from 7.1 to add to 7.02.

wishing you all the best and hope you are all ok.
