Question For The Hosting Companies

We're getting ready to buy some new machines at a fairly hefty price from HP.  Of course, I'm not a hardware type guy and would just like an opinion of the machine.  I know some will like the brand, some of you will have another brand that you prefer, and that is fine.  These are the build specs on the machine which has been requested for a specific purpose.  Yes, Dolphin 6 & 7 will run on it, no we are not entering the hosting business, this is purely for our own personal R&D purposes.

So without further ado here is the specs on the machine we're looking to purchase.  No, you don't want to know the price tag.

Of course, this is being built under Federal TAA Guidelines, meaning it will be a US assembled machine utilizing as much US only parts as possible, impossible to get one fully US parts.  We tried.  Yes, it's a big machine, figuring it should last us for quite awhile in the R&D area as we work with creating our own version of Dolphin.

***Yes, I know it would take a long time to spend on hosting what this machine is going to cost me, it's not about the hosting price, it's being purchased for completely different purposes and so we can do what we do on a closed network system.

I'm glad you guys like the number of drives, processors and such. Question is, hardware wise is this the best way to configure a server? I mean, with the high number of 300GB & 72 GB Drives, memory & so on or is there a better way to set this up? The purpose of the server is to run a CMS through it's R&D for us and to give us a good grasp of the server requirements that it'll take without being limited by any host on this project.

Son, for that kind of money, why don't you buy a real server:

Sun SPARC Enterprise T5220 Server

If you knew some of the people that work on those things here in Houston, you'd away away from HP.

Don't matter the brand too much. I prefer at least dual xeon(quads) or 8 cpu's total minimum these days. Depending on what you are after you could get by with quad core. And 4 to 8 gb's ram. 2 to 4 will do depending on the setup.

People mess things up a lot. So support time and service is a major issue. I don't like to wait 24 hours I need a reply asap which is what I get now.

R&D by no means requires what you have spec'd. Dual 1TB's on RAID1 with 2GB Ram on each machine would suffice for basically any application that you throw at it. That is of course my opinion, and I know I would never see a need to spend that kinda cash for a system that is just R&D. If you had a platform that was already running that was carrying a load, then yes such a setup could prove worthy, but then you get into the whole ordeal of load balancing, router configuration, and clusters. see more also, you can build any rocketship powerhouse you want, but if you put it on the wrong launch platform, meaning your incoming/outgoing connection with adequate throughput, then all you have done is spent an ass bucket load of money for something that looks good on whitepaper.
