Dolphin 7.0.2 Release Estimates

VictorT posted 4th of May 2010 in . 36 comments.

Our estimate plan is to release the next version and upgrade patch in the beginning of June.

The idea is that you know the rough estimate that won't make you wait so long for the next update, as it was with previous release.

The process is that we fix the bugs, of course the critical and major ones go first and have high priority. After we do the release while leaving behind the rest of "not-fixed" bugs for the next version and patch release. So on..

Of course, there will be those of you who are "for" or "against" this move. But, think first about that we do this for your convenience and confidence. Let's try it out.

Dead slow, same errors, same problems..
Any news about that crappy template system being fixed?
Any news about Orca tons of errors being fixed?
Any news about the inability to have a flexible module position in the page?
Any news about resizing/editing (for real) the main menu?
VictorT
If the appropriate tickets are submitted in Trac then you need to follow them, if not then push the case for them to be there. No need to post this here. ;)

Why have an estimate? - why not commit to a date?
VictorT
It is really difficult to stick to the exact date with all pre-release settlements. We appointed the estimate time. So you know for sure to expect it to be there one day in June. Just imagine you wake up and here it is...
CodeSatori
@DeeEmm: It's probably an estimate only because Boonex developers are yet to figure out exactly how much work there is to be done.

Of course if Boonex decided to release whatever is done after one month, it'd be easy to give a date, but I suspect a part of the problem is the fact that many bugs are interconnected, and fixing one means having to fix X amount of "dependent" bugs, and then fix the bugs in something that depended on and broke when the other bugs were finally fixed.

Is there any progress on the server CPU running at 100% issue many people are having with XML.php? That is the thing I am most concerned about.

Thanks for the info Victor. Please keep the community posted. I work with software dev projects all the time and it is never a straight path. Looking forward to the next update.
VictorT
Thanks James. Just trying different ways of accomplishment of all this, which were discussed before in Unity :)

is a good thing
it allows you to focus less on function - so fewer problems at the same time - thus reducing bugs - caused by bug fixes - as with the update of D7.0.1

@codesatori - there is - and always will be more work to do than can be done in a reasonable amount of time - I say set a firm date and if only one bug gets fixed - so be it. It will take 2 / 3 scheduled releases before they get into the swing of things - there is a whole work ethic that needs to be revised for things to happen efficiently.

It would not surprise me if beginning of June actually = Beginning of July or later.

Please do it !!!!!!!!!
Change Dolphin to display correct TIMEZONE, depend on local setting of users but NOT server time?
rajasimon
my community very slow .......
danielmarseille
if you can - before the release of 7.0.2 - get out a patch to fix D7.0.1 - it is almost impossible to work on our site

Thanks for letting us know. :D

Thanks for the update. An estimated time is better than having a "Hell, I don't really a clue" type of response. :)

Since dolphin 7 came out I always thought it is SLOW.. . unfortunately it is still slow... hopefully performance will be a priority for future..

Till then I stick with dolphin 6

I'll make a giant "x" on my calendar for the month of June. I'll be waiting.

I also give this blog post an hour before it is filled with people seeking support and feature suggestions.

CALTRADE
Do you know when D7.01 will be fixed? You have seen the forums right? It has so many major problems it probably shouldn't have been released
danodiez
Will it be possible to upgrade 7.0.0 to 7.0.2 without having to do 7.0.1. first? (i.e. skip one release)

Add to this list, record a profile video doesn't either.

Although I have been following Dolphin for many years, I have only been using Dolphin for a short while and IMHO, there is a lot of bloat here. Other than all important bugs, please streamline the code more and cut out the fat, Dolphin requires much too much memory and resources. I run my site on a VPS account with a gig of memory on a fast twin processor multi-core Xeon server that is shared with several Wordpress domains and other scripts, and everything runs sluggish with Dolphin installed. I see more don't use RMS and that's the way I would like to keep it, but Dolphin still consumes too much.

For everyone complaining...I have been here for quite a while now and seen it from both sides...I have two things to say...If you aren't happy with the way boonex is handling it, considering they live in a warzone, Dolphin is extremely complicated software, and HOLY CRAP it's free, then you should probably realize that all the bitching is not getting anything accomplished, and it sure isn't making the developers say "OH CRAP PEOPLE AREN"T HAPPY WE HAD BETTER GET WITH IT!" Why? Because see more they are busting their butts to get this software right. Secondly if you can do it better than Boonex have at it. Bottom line is you can't that is why they handle it.

Just relax and come to the realization that this software although a pain sometimes is the best out there OR YOU WOULDN'T BE USING IT! So at the end of the day it is all wasted energy. LIke my Mom always said if you don't have something nice to say Don't Say It At All.

*steps off soap box and awaits the flames*

Hey Victor - early June is here ;)

@chancedevin - Dolphin is a commercial script that has at least $500K annually invested in it's development. It's not free open source community written code, it's a commercial product that many people have paid / invested lots of money into. These same people deserve to receive what has been promised to them.

Like my my mum says - don't make promises you cannot keep.

Also...

Your quote "Dolphin is extremely complicated software" is incorrect - it should be "Dolphin is extremely see more OVER-complicated software". There's nothing special going on here - they are the same tools everyone else on the internet uses.

It's only complicated if you do not know what you are doing.

BTW You sound exactly like Sammie - lol. (is that you Sammie)

@chancedevin

OK, we'll all shut up. Just 'cause you've told us we should & because you've been here a while. We never liked having our own opinions anyway. :P

@DeeEmm

Kinda does sound like Sammie a bit, doesn't it? I don't think Sammie would have ever uttered "Holy Crap" though. She would have probably used some term that was vastly more colorful. chancedevin is friends with CalTrade too. I like CalTrade just fine, but if I remember right, Sammie would have preferred being see more skinned alive then adding CalTrade as a friend.

It could be a clever ploy to disguise her true identity though! (cue cheesy, overly dramatic sound bite)
