I just wanted to encourage all of my fellow Dolphin users to be strong. I know there are a few people here who want to be like Facbook but I say this to why not be better than fb. None of us here can be like fb but we can be a breath of fresh air to the millions of people who don't use fb but are looking for something different. I truly believe the Dolphin software is a powerful tool. So lets all just be ourselves and create the next big thing.

That's my point to everyone here that wants to be like fb, just be creative with the dolphin software. We have to remember that mark really didn't create fb on his own. He took someone else idea and ran with it. Like you said just enhance.

Per a US Federal ruling a couple of months ago, any domain with the name facebook in it, can be sued!.  Even in international circumstances, the W3C can come after you along with your country of original.  Just letting you know b4 you run out and start purchasing names like dolphinfacebook, musicfacebook and other types of sillyness.

What's 'twittwer'?

One day I'm going to do a serious, serious blog on this  website copycatting thing.  Of course technology and the growth of it is always been based on layered growth and innovation, but this "I wanna be like facebook" or "I wanna be like Myspace" thing drives me bonkers, especially when I'm doing work for clients who are insisting on being like them.  I've had clients spend $8000 on building their site with every feature like FB, then spending $800 on marketing, then quitting.  Huh!?  That makes no freakin' sense!!

I use the dolphin platform for the social network components because quite frankly, despite some of its irritating shortcomings and its critics, Dolphin is a remarkable script.  With regard to separating yourselves with unique concepts, that's what my blog will be about.

In total, I've made over $50K USD with 1 Dolphin site and I have 3 other Dolphin based sites that VCs and investors are very interested it...interested in them to the tune of the Mid 6 figure range with respect to initial capitalization.  The key thing about it is, their interest in is not based around the Facebook concept or Myspace concept.  Although, the features are critical to operation, the concepts are based on clear and identifiable monetization strategies that all tie into real world (terrestrial) activities.  They are based on quantifiable measurements and innovative ideas.

As an analogy, there was this thing invented a long time ago called an "engine".. or "motors".  When these were first invented, they were designed for propulsion.  Someone initially put them in a locomotive, then cars, then manufacturing machines, then other things such as airplanes, air conditioner, etc.  I could go on and on.  The point that I'm trying to make is that they are all engines/motors but the people were still able to create new things and make trillions of dollars from the same base concept.  Oh well, that's enough for now.  I hope this helps someone somewhere into a mental paradigm shift.

The way I see it, either you need to build around a unique idea and hope it catches on, or build around an existing idea and market the crap out of it....and I said idea not site. ( For example, I guarantee any dolphin site could make a good income if it ranked highly for dating related keywords.)

The problem is, even if you come up with a unique idea, somebody else might come along and copy it and then market the crap out of it.  He or she might beat you even though you were first.

Any chance you would share the urls of one or more of these sites?

I was going to start a site called assbook.com, but the domain was taken.   The idea was to just have every member upload a picture of their ass.  (That's as far as I got with the idea)  Then I figured people might think the site had something to do with reserving the services of prostitutes.... so I abandoned the idea.  Maybe somebody else wants to run with the idea.

I'll look into it.

Yeah I know.  Several months ago he wanted $10,000. I didn't make any of that up.  I really was going to do it.  I just didn't like the idea $10,000 worth.

I know of a guy who's been sitting on a domain for over a decade now; still wants $5,000,000.00 for it.

People don't realize groups like VC's and angel are big investors looking for the next new thing. That's why I tell people don't try to be like fb because you will only short change yourself from making real money.
