Mail trash does not delete

I am told the mail trash auto deletes with the cronjob. Myself and every member of my site trash has never deleted since joining my D7 site. My cron is ***** cd /home/lworld/public_html/periodic; /usr/local/bin/php -q cron.php

Can someone advice me how to solve this.

yeah, I have the same issue, Jennifer. It has been 3 days now and they're not emptied yet.  We can upload videos and use video comments just fine so I'm assuming my cron job is correct.  I have over 79 mails in trash...ugh.  Did anyone solve this?  Thanks

Patrick

I'm having the same issue.

I think members will want to be able to empty their trash.

Many will get frustrated when they can't.  I know I did.

Yep.  It's better to have a delete button there ready and let them do it.

This will not work correctly until boonex handles the mail a bit differently. Let me try to explain.

When you send a message to someone. The message is created in the database. That message will appear in the senders outbox and in the recipients inbox, but there is only one copy of the message in the database.

When the recipient deletes the message, the message is flagged as deleted by the recipient thus shows up in the trash instead of the inbox.

The code that purges messages required that the recipient and the sender have both marked that message as deleted before it will be removed.

This is becuse there is only one copy of the message, so until both delete the same message it will remain.

Now the code can be changed in the cron job to delete them anyway but will have the following side affect.

If a recipient deletes a message and that message is forced out by the cron, the message will disappear from the senders outbox as well. Also if a sender deletes a message from their outbox and the cron forces it out, then it will also disappear from the recipients inbox.

So, until boonex switches this from a single copy message system to a 2 copy system, that problem can not be corrected. The mail system is flawed. There should be a copy of the message for both the sender and the recipient so one can delete while the other still retains a copy.

So is this a bug, or a feature.

Welllllllll, it's not a bug. The system works the way boonex designed it. But it's just plain stupid.

I see deano.  I think i understand.  So is there a way to fix it?  My members really want to empty the trash. It annoys me!  :-/

Thank you Deano92964.  Do you know if Boonex intends to address this issue in future versions?

Also, my mail notifications in my task bar are all messed up.  It will say I have 2 friend requests and 2 messages even when there is nothing there (except of course in the trash bin that I can't delete).

Any ideas on how to address this?  Am I the only one?

Are you serious this is how the system works?  I really hope for D8 they start from the ground up and hire a freaken end-user designer to prevent these issues.

I am serious. This is how it works. The messaging system is flawed. I don't think boonex has any plans to fix it, and i currently do not have a solution either.

Even if I delete all my emails, the toolbar will still show that I have emails.  If I have 10 emails it will show that I have 14.  When I delete all 10 it will show that I still have 6.  It's the craziest thing.  My friend requests are also doing this.

Any ideas?

Not really. I cannot replicate that on my site.

I'm getting more and more complaints about this issue.  They keep asking me how to clear out the trash.  Boonex, can you please fix this. In the meantime, is it possible to clear all trash messages in phpmyadmin?  Please advice.  Thanks

Patrick

Yes you can, but as i mentioned, because it is a single message copy system the messages you delete will also be removed from the senders sent messages list.

yeah i get what you're saying.. man this sucks.  I don't know what to do with my members. they seem to be so serious about this.  Maybe it's best to remove the trash tab and make them think they're gone completely.

That's actually a pretty good idea...at least until someone comes up with a "fix" for this.  I'm told that the cron job should delete old messages in the trash, but this is not happening to me.

WTG that is so true, fix it its a HUGE deal. A buggy communication system on a communication site is unforgiveable.

This issue should have gotten immediate attention. It's things like this that will keep Dolphin from ever being #1.

I give the Boonex team credit they are good coders but sometimes they lack common sense.

Give me something to believe in...

Son of a ...

I was just searching for the reason I couldn't empty my trash. Who's the brain fart that thought this up?

Ok Deano, how about this. A mod that auto deletes any mail/messages from the database that are 60 days or older irregardless of the users wishes? It's certainly not a perfect fix but will help those with large sites that are trying to keep their mail in check.

Well i can see a reason for it. If they switched to a two copy system it would take twice as much database space. So they sacrificed features to save space.

Kinda ironic. Wasting space seems to be common place with the photos, videos, and music, but they choose not to do it with the mail.

Anyhoo. I have spent some time thinking about it, and i believe a single copy system would work, they just did not do it right.

As soon as i am done with the IPB mod and a couple of others i am in the middle of as well as new release of my tools, i will see what i can do about this silly issue.

open /templates/base/scripts/BxBaseMailbox.php  and around line 691 fined

// 'trash'   =>  _t( '_Trash' ),     and comment it out so the link from the mail box block is removed.

then open admin - builders - navigation menu and remove the trash block to inactive so the trash link is removed from the menu.

Sure its not a fix but it makes it look like the mail is deleted....    to lazy to fix it the proper way...

There's still a block on the 'account' page which shows the trash bin.

I can't get into my database right now but I was just throwing thoughts around while reading this topic...

How difficult would it be to remove the recipient from the message when they flag it to be deleted? The message would still exist within the outbox of the sender, and in theory should not appear in the recipients inbox or trashed items.

I suppose a flaw to this would be no recipient listed when the sender checked their sent items, but it would effectively remove the item from the other end once deleted.

I'm thinking this system could still work with a single copy of the message, just duplicate the recipient table for each end of the message. IE create an outbox_recipient and inbox_recipient. The sender of the message would rely on the outbox_recipient field to identify where they sent the message to, and the receiving member would rely on inbox_recipient to know when they have a message. When they chose to delete message, it nulls the inbox_recipient and it no longer shows in their inbox??

Like I said, just throwing thoughts around here. I'm a database rookie, but it seems to me like an idea that could actually work?
