New D7

Okay I am confused here. I thought this was to be the final version, yet it seems to have alot of issues still. I can not even get past the installing part. I understand there will be bugs, but come on now, why can't this install be as easy as all the other Dolphins?

I also thought that when this would be released it would be fairly close to finished. I read on the blog that there is no date for the final release, I guess I'll have to wait since I really don't have the time to be testing out beta scripts..

I got to say I am very dissapointed in this new release. It has many many bugs and is in NO way ready for us to install and use! I did get it installed on another server but as i tried to bring up the page builder all i get are blank pages. I can not even access the main page to work on it.

This is a very sad day indeed, and such a waste of time.

I did find if I go through file manager and unzip D7 there, it will install, but still alot is missing. Why are we releasing a software that is only 75% ready? Why waste our time to give us something we can just look at? I feel this software will NOT be ready for a stable release for at least 3 months. Come on Boonex, fess up. You and I both know there is ALOT that still needs to be done and will take longer. So now what. Final release 2010?

It's just a Beta - I wouldn't be too concerned about it yet. It's probably best to wait for a Beta update or two & then judge it. Now if this were an RC I would be very scared. LOL

It's in the homestretch now. Time to think positive. =D

I would expect that the improvements will come fast & furious over the next few weeks.

Has anyone found out if there will be an upgrade path from 6.1x yet? It would help to know right about now. ; )

guys, i think this post would not even have existed if the post from andrew had been read:

BETA, BETA, BETA.

Imagine yourself running late for a plane and only half of your stuff packed. You just throw the rest into your cases and off you go. That's pretty much how the current beta is. It has bugs and is very fast-baked. Still, the idea is to present everything that's going to make it into the final release and gradually polish it.

aboslutely admits there are bugs, and that this is a BETA see more release. so i cant imagine what all of the fuss is about in relation to this actual release.

now i do understand, that we have all sat patiently since January 2009 waiting on this thing to be released only to find out that its in all intents and purposes prematurely released.

andrew does say that he is looking for help from the community, and our feedback will be addressed when problems are discovered.

i am going to try to get my install done this evening, and will be reporting to the forum what i am finding.

Yes the post said beta, but the twitter said FINAL which in my mind meant important things work, but may have a few errors, not that only 75% of program is there Dos. And yes this is very frustrating,it's like going to test drive a car, but they don't give you the tires and wheels. How is this possible to test drive?

i agree.... i was wondering to test the entire script... and i cant... this is not a beta... its more buggy that the alpha....
Here is what I think everyone is probably going to be upset about..

Yes, the release is beta, but on the announcement of the release date, no one expected a beta, everyone lead to believe a near to finish version is what they were getting...The original date as I recall was late June, then it was pushed to July 8th. Everyone was Ok with it because they were expecting a 97% finished release..Why wasn't pushed back 2 months and have a better release? Now after waiting till June and then a few more see more weeks later, they have got something which is really not stable and basically still in test stages. Now members will have to install D7 and add patches after patches till the finial release comes out...I think the community gets disappointed when they are told a certain date, then 2 weeks more only to find out that all the wait was for a beta portion of the release...I personally would prefer to be told that the release is in December and wait for it rather then think a release is in 2 weeks and get only beta...Just my thoughts...

I so agree with your post. I could live with this release if it was 97% finished, but 75% is more a tease then a relief for all of us who have waited to open their sites for business and not testing. But again we sit and wait, while we are thrown a few tasty crumbs just to wet our appetites.

Actually "Feature Final" means no more features added. It's basically a freeze on any further additions.

The rest is now bug fixes to the current features.

This is a first beta, so unless people are good with code and like to mess, i wouldnt touch it unless you want grey hairs :-)
Its prudent i think for people who just want D7 to work properly just to wait till its been tested for weeks, maybe months and had update after update until it settles. It will settle but its going to takes some time yet

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and take on dolphin. What I've seen and my opinion is that dolphin alpha is worthless and might consider it little teaser and a demo of what is to come. Traditionally dolphin beta's are more like other software's alpha's. Many bugs and a lot of things don't work.

To me beta testing most software most things work with a few minor issues or bugs. An alpha generally most things work but a bit more bugs and is considered non-production.

Dolphin stable see more in the first round or two, I really refer to it as beta even though they call it stable at that point. Somethings start to work but plenty of bugs yet. It is usually not until round 3-5 of a official dolphin stable release that it really starts to take shape and work the way it should.

In my view this new dolphin beta would be labeled alpha by most other software makers. This is just my opinion. Test it out and see for your self though.

I wouldn't consider this remotely stable for a number of releases yet, nor would I use it on a live or production site. A test environment is what it should be used for and considered for some time yet.

I have no idea what the progress is on dolphin 7 stable, but I would expect a decent stable version is many months out yet, unless things change considerably from what I am used to seeing.

Fun to play with and test though, which is all it should really be used for right now!

I continue to use d6.1.4, I wouldn't call it perfect, there are a few minor glitches, but I think as of right now it is the most stable version.

D6.1.4 is where its at right now. The last two upgrades are a mess as my presence still doesnt work. D7 will be nice when its ready but folks thats along way away for me i am looking at early next year. I understand where Lightwolf is coming from but i add just chill out and dont pay much attention to release dates and buzz words. Cuz there is way to much work to be done. ps. If Boonex posted final on D7 anywhere they should retracted it as a typo or something as it would be a untrue statement. no see more matter the pit falls i am still in UNITY ;O)

What I can't wrap my head around is why there are so many bugs. When I code, and trust me I have coded a whole lot of software similar to Dolphin, the bug-fix phase will take about 10-15% of the total development time (except with cross-browser HTML/CSS with certain browsers).

What's the design approach here? Do the developers just shoot in from the hip all sorts of features in whatever manner and shape, and at one point declare it Feature Final and start figuring out what the heck exactly they see more put together?

That's pretty Frankenstein for an approach, but I fear quite on the mark, just as was my note two few weeks back on July 10th bringing us an Alpha 2 labeled as Beta.

Why not code something that works from the outset? If there are tons of bugs, it indicates 1) the design of the base framework is bad, 2) the development is disorganized and unstructured, or 3) the developers lack in skill. I like to think it's primarily the first, and to an extent the second, which are both something relatively easy to remedy with the right action plan.
