Let's Bring Order To Expertzzz! Suggest And Share. We Need Your Help.

Andrew Boon posted 4th of February 2008 in . 63 comments.
Expertzzz.com is now getting more and more visitors every day. It's now an eco-system on it's own with lots of opportunities and, unfortunately, problems.

We've got to bring order to the system for the benefit of all who use Expertzzz to create better community sites and for all who make money by offering their products and services.

Everyone interested, please join the discussion and suggest your solutions. if you have an opinion - share it. If you have knowledge - share. Experience - share.

I will put up an action plan and will set development deadlines for BoonEx team, but now we need your input.

Please, post itemized comments according to the following pattern:

1. Navigation And Structure. What you have to say about Expertzzz.com navigation and structure. We did have some complaints about this and would love to make improvements.

2. Buyer And Seller Protection. We can't check every mod, job result, plugin or service quality. What we can do to protect buyers from crap-in-the-box purchases, fraud and poor service quality? What we can do to protect sellers from theft, CC fraud, bad reviews from competitors, etc? Think about community voting/commenting, moderators, and other community-driven control tools.

3. SPAM. Forums SPAM and Downloadz SPAM, SPAM in profiles and in blogs. It HAS to be stopped. Promotion of your services should be regulated and should not interfere with on-topic content, unless it is really appropriate. What's your take?

4. Support Via Forums. Many members fail to understand that most Expertzzz visitors come to the site for SUPPORT. Yes, there's an opportunity to earn money, but you have to give if you want to get. Selling mods is not enough. If we want to create an ultimate destination where customers will look for support and then extras, we need to give our hand to those in need for information at Forumz. We need Experts to help each other, help newbies and thus make the community grow. With larger community - your earning opportunities would quadruple. What are your ideas on how to motivate knowledgeable Experts help others on Forumz more than they do now?

5. Features. And finally, suggest website functionality that would make the whoel Expertzzz world a better place. And yeah - report bugs too.

We're looking forward to hearing back from you. With the upcoming releases of Ray 3.5, Dolphin 6.1 and Shark the whole Expertzzz story will heat up ten-folds, so if you're interested in keeping it live and rocking - WRITE NOW!

hiya pal..

1) I do not see much problem with the navigation. There is however several bugs in the new setup. 90% of them are in the LightBox function. Like login, account set up etc.

2) I agree with you 100% on this. buys AND sellers need to be protected. There are alot of crooks in this world and unforuntatly we have attracted some to our community. I offer myself up to you as a mod on the site if you would like.

I think more man power ( even free volunteers like myself) is needed. see more I know you have to be very carefull on who you shoose for these roles because there is alot at stake.

I myself spend HOURS every day on the site answering Emails and giving support.

I would be more than happy.

3) I agree with the spam issue. I think there should be a 2 strike rule... 1st time warned and content removed... 2nd time removed from the site. PERIOD. After 2 or 3 people get booted and made examples of then this will slow to a crawl

4) I agree, and I will be the 1st to admit that I am lacking in this area. Everytime I go onto the site my Indox is full of questions and asking for answers. That is how I have been giving support because it takes alot of time answering the Emails.

I will make more of a commitment to the forums and attemp to give more time to it.

5) i gave my only real bug reports above other than the SWREG never did work for me. I will attempt to ad it to my shop again soon

Andrey, you guys do a GREAT job and service to the community. please, if you will allow. Allow us in the community to help where we can.

Myself and Dadniel have volunteered our services to you. I am sure a couple of the more trusted people in the community would be willing to assist as well.

This is a community. It is NOT about take take take..
We all give back every day... and as you can see.. Some of us want to give much much more
Andrew Boon
Thank you Simion. Looks like "Moderators" idea is very likely to be there, and we're happy to see some people actually willing to help us with this.
Simion
One more thing Andrey...lol

I know that we can not just REMOVE items because they are simular to someone elses. That would be crazy.

but lets take the one you removed for me as of recent. That was a hands down case of theft. He was even using my demo site for the mod. ( how rude..lol)

Or like CodyT posting our mods in bundles.

Those are just a couple examples that would show that YES.. that person needs to be removed.

now if I have a mod out for sale and someone improves on see more it, then that person can post that improvment. the polite thing to do however is to contact the creater of the mod and let them know what they are doing
( as I have done in the past with Rayz and Anton)

This will keep drama down and the "B.S." mods off the site
Andrew Boon
This is very tricky. You, for one, just said that you'd OK reselling modified versions of your mods, while other might think different. On the other hand - while recent cases were pretty obvious, sometimes we see some "less obvious" cases - like people selling mods with same functionality but "different" code, where "different" would mean anything between - totally different and slightly modified.
mscott
One suggestion, there should be a way to leave a comment after a job is completed in "jobz".. it could be just like the "downloadz" comments are now. So if someone accepts your bid and then pays you upon completion they could let everyone else know how well (or poor) you did. Also, there seem to be major problems with the dowloadz payments. Only about 25% of the people buying mods are able to download them. I have to email the mods to most people.
Andrew Boon
Comments for completed Jobz will be added. We will also review payments all over again and will do our best to make it work properly.
brown7477
1) Jobz Modification. Why dont you have a escrow setup for customers to pay for work and release only after satisfaction. This will prevent some issues.

2) Boonex really needs to step on the support. I have been requesting support for weeks now with a RMS issue. and no response is like telling me I am not important. This makes me not want to support Boonex products. I have several Dolphin Sites hosted on my servers and I am expected to give support. But when I do Not even get a simple response see more it makes me feel like My issues are unimportant. Well my issues are affecting several customers. ( Every Site I host ) So I am speaking for 20+ people. But I see because I personally have nothing more than a Free Demo Site. I don't deserve a response.
Please setup on the support.

3) You should appoint someone to manually inspect and approve downloads before allowing them posted.
This will prevent the reselling of others products.

4) I personally have been disgusted by what has been going on, I speak to Simion and Dadniel daily and they know how disgusted I am with Boonex. I wanna be a part of the Boonex Community but getting discarded like I am nobody important has pushed me over the edge so i choose to walk away. I get updates through Simion and Dadniel. I do not even bother to visit unless they tell me something I might wanna follow up on. Such as this.

4) I have a script for installing Dolphin that knocks the complete install time down to about 5 minutes and I was going to offer it on Expertzzz. But I know what will happen, So I keep it to myself. No Downloading or Uploading required of the script.

I Hope to see some drastic improvements
Matthew
Andrew Boon
1. Escrow idea sounds good. We will look at how we could implement it. It would good if you could elaborate on details of this functionality. How do you see this?

2. We're looking at the ways to improve our support services all the time. It's a hard issue to be honest and very often it's difficult to tell which particular case need more attention or less. Anyway, we do appreciate your business and will try to help. Describe your situation and send letters. No answer - send again, sometimes they see more get buried.

3. Manual inspection by our staff is nearly impossible. it's just not future-proof OR will result in increased need for funding for this project. We need community-driven or filter-driven system. Manpower is one problem, possible implications related to inability to treat every mod and person equally is yet another problem.

4+4) I've been disgusted too. But looks like this is how the world is - there're leeches and you just can for your idea to fly free. When launching Expertzzz all we wanted is to let people share, earn money and help each other with our software. We removed most of the limits, taken down the commission and set it free. Now, we have this.

Anyway, I hope and I am sure to see some VERY drastic improvements in the nearest future, whatever it takes. We want to unite people, no to make them rumble and struggling to survive.

You're most welcome to wait, help us rebuild the site and then inspect it for being suitable for your future mods.

If you want to see one of the best Escrow setups then you need to check out www.rentacoder.com
I am willing to assist as well.
I am not going to make many friends with my comments, but I appreciate this opportunity to speak my piece and hopefully some one will glean some understanding from my ranting.

I’d like to point out that this community is not just expertzzz, or only members of the “Mod Squad” and their customers. When I first came here I was under the impression that it was a close-knit group of people who had come together to help beta test and develop the best community software in the world, not for other see more coders and nerds, but for the common folk who want to put their own mark on the world and share their lives with their old friends as well as ones they hope to meet in the global internet community.

I believe in Boonex and I have a love / hate relationship with this community. I love watching Baby Boonex grow and mature. It never ceases to amaze me how far its come, but I hate that we have failed to bring forth a product that any one can download and install with little or no previous experience. I love that before I can work out the bugs in one version there is already a new one waiting for me, but I hate that there still is no documentation and support. I am no coder but I am learning and I really feel bad for those potential customers who think they have found the holy grail only to go through hell with no one to help them.

I love that some of the Mod Gods are helping potential customers in their emails, but I hate that the general community and potential new customers are left to flop around on the shore like helpless fish gasping for knowledge and receiving no help. After all this software is for the masses is it not? The more people who can download it and have a working site, the more people willing to buy licenses and mods.

I also want to remind you all that we are not alone here. I am really ashamed at the some of the childish unprofessional behavior I have seen. How must this theft and finger pointing and bickering look to the potential customers who pass through? I am sure it demonstrates unity and inspires confidence in the product.

1. Navigation and Structure: We need to make everything more centralized and easier for the customers to find the answers they need. Focus has been turning to making money and away from supporting software.
2. Buyer and Seller Protection: The focus should be on Boonex products and not mods or services. Separate the two. Get all of the mods off of Boonex site. Policing the creation and sale of mods or services IS NOT Boonex responsibility. That responsibility lies with the mod owner. Before you form a lynch mob hear me out. How do you reward those who work so hard if you take away their ability to sell their mods? That’s simple really. Encourage people to create their own Dolphin sites featuring their modifications and services. Show the world your talent. Let your products and expertise speak for themselves. Sell from your own storefront. I have many years of experience with PayPal and Ebay. Learn PayPal’s dispute resolution process and police yourselves. PayPal can be deadly on unscrupulous sellers. Also those less proficient people are not going to be able to stand the competition from those who are really the Mod Pros.
3. Spam: Outlaw all spam of any kind on Boonex . Boonex can sell or reward those deserving with ad space and licenses for their contributions. Those obnoxious little ads on free Dolphin and Ray? Sell that space to developers so they can entice people to their sites. We have an affiliate program, make money selling boonex products from your own sites. The key here is that we need to concentrate on getting a good product out to the general public. Produce a pleasing product that millions of people want to buy and make our money from our own sites created with and supporting Boonex.
4. Support via forums: This is very important. Forums are for solving problems and answering questions and not for self-promotion. Therefore I don’t think it’s a good idea to have the forums moderated by people who might abuse that power. Instead it should be some one impartial whose best interests are with Boonex customers. As Boonex continues to grow and become more stable and customer friendly more sales will naturally come. As that happens hire and train professional support personnel.
5. The one feature that has been neglected most is support. It’s time to place a stable product on the market that contains links to a help file. Those of you who have mastered the art of installing and configuring all phases Boonez problems should start thinking how we can get more satisfied customers and not selling every little piece of code that was inadvertently left out of the product. Lets combine all of our little tricks into a easy to read and understand manual.
I am looking forward to the future and wish us all the best.

Boonex The Best Never Rest
Andrew Boon
1. yes, I agree. Current layout became cluttered and messy, so it's getting difficult for less experienced visitors to find something and things just don't "flow" well. I will work on a better structure this week.

2. full move from Expertzzz to vendors' sites doesn't feel right when i think of customers... It becomes even more difficult to compare products, browse and buy in bundles, but your idea still brings some interesting points that we should consider.

3. Right on about the see more spam.

4. I agree, and still have to look for ways to attract more non-boonex techs to help in forums.

5. Oh yeah - this is what pundits and Trac Wiki is for.

Thanks for your input. I start getting a better picture of what we need to do.
If any one needs some one to write content, I am your man and I believe in the barter system.
I would be willing to add a exisiting structure to allow people to register and validate (for sellers) so when people purchase they know they are getting REAL goods.

I can work this into some PHP validation (License) tracking as well if needed.

I just dont want to start down this road if no one will use it.

let me know and I will get something up and running in a very short notice.
Andrew Boon
Could you elaborate on this PHP validation idea? What exactly do you mean?
I will send you details via Victor T.

Should be able to public test it in the next few days.

It has been a pretty active topic and mostly have gotten positive feedback.

A few negative commenter's have had good points, and all are being taken into account.

There are some people in expertzzz publishing our products....This has to be stopped.

I will do my best in helping others....
dadniel
I spend hours upon hours on this site every day and like Simion -- I offer those hours in a moderator capacity.

I would also like to suggest we install something like Yahoo Answers... a quick way for the webmaster to post a question, or search previous answers and an easy way for expertzzz to jump in during some free time and leaf thru questions offering answers.

Thanks for your efforts on the cleanup around here.. my faith is coming back.

The problem with people posting products that are see more not theirs to sell -- simple fix. Each product posted must be approved by a moderator. The moderators only grounds for not approving the item should be that they can prove it is not the work of the member posting the item.

Again... anything you need from me - I am here. I think Dolphin is the finest open source community software available and am proud to be a member of this community.

Looking forward to our mutually successful future.

D
Andrew Boon
Yahoo Answers.... don't you think that Forumz is almost the same thing? maybe I'm missing something, please give more details.

As for moderators... yes, sounds like inevitable already, yet should be done right, as can become a big problem on its own.
Simion
I think the post moderation is a great idea. will keep the bogus material from "hitting the streets"
echoman74
I just want to say i'm very new to this i am NOT a programmer.I post whatever i can on a daily basis i try to get feedback and sometimes here and there i'm even willing to pay for something.
I noticed this has been happening to lots of people there mods and info etc being taken.
I think there should be a larger staff assigned people to certain forums and areas so people answer like the 30 plus question's i've had get answered it's really frustrating being someone with no programming skills and see more trying to find feedback and help on certain thing's even if they can't be answered a simple reply does not hurt .
As for other parts of the site assign more staff to the downloadzzz area so they can check for fraud.
I noticed that fakes post there emails instead of a download before someone especially a newbie like myself goes to that area there should be a flag or something to let people know or warn them of false mods and the warning signs. I also think you should have a staff for fraud and false claims etc.
Whether or not you have to pay people atleast reward them if they volunter there time help them also.
We are all on a mission we all have family's friends etc...We all are part of a great community!!!
But there seriously seriously needs to be a more people to make it better.
I am not a quiter never have been and i honestly hope things change cus to be honest unlike me there will be lots of people that will walk away if there are no changes.

now somehow some way there are several problems on the expertzzz the login won't work on forum page
the photo upload won't work and trying to go back a page won't work.

i'm willing to give feedback as much i can but hope that if some of you see me there give me a hand i'm on a kettle right now till i can find people to actually help me!!!! thanks for reading my comment hope this helps a bit.
Andrew Boon
Thank you. yes, we definitely need some dedicated admins there too, and we'll try appoint some.

1. Navigation and Structure: This is looking much better than before with all the different domain names to try and keep track of. Please see the following

I made another post on the importance of well documented standards so that developers can develop mods and still stay in alignment with future upgrades. As we can see by everyone’s comments that many of you are concerned about how to upgrade and be able to maintain your mods as I am as well.

Microsoft and many other software apps would see more be in big trouble if there was no way to upgrade without losing all your custom mods or apps. Now I realize no software is capable of sustain and upgrade and completely 100% for anything somebody else creates. But by creating a clear and easy framework to work within can avoid many of the challenges upgrades present to third-party mods.

I cannot stress enough the importance of the future of this community to succeed as a team the importance to devising a set of standards that are clearly communicated so that many developers can work on the development of mods for Dolphin.
Here you can see this product we also work with that is a world class CMS and they have a great developers section that empowers developers to develop third party apps they refer to as extensions. http://dev.joomla.org/ Because they have went the extra mile to clearly communicate interworking of the Joomla’s core that in return aids web entrepreneurs and developers to develop even more extensions to make the core even more flexible. http://extensions.joomla.org/
So I say look at what some of the other successful open source groups are doing and try a mimic their successes as much as possible. The Alexa growth and success says a lot about how much attention the community is paying attention to Joomla http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details/joomla.org

I personally like Joomla especially the latest 1.5 version. It’s easy to use and there are tons of extensions available to address just about any kind of need you want.

The closest extension however they have that makes Joomla act somewhat like is a product called Community Builder. Still way behind the curve compared to Dolphin. Also there is no such thing as Ray. So Joomla while I like what they have done with their community involvement of third party modules and developers they have a lot of catching up to do before they will even be close to what Dolphin does.

However, I think we need to be looking at what they are doing right. Clearly the Alexa rankings indicate its hot and doing something right. And I think what they are doing better right now than Boonex products and please take this only as constructive criticism and don’t smack me to hard because I like you guys and love your work so far. Anyway they are communicating better on all levels. Plain and simple. Because they are doing a better job at doing this I think you are seeing a lot of professionals get involved in making the product even better.

It’s very hard to want to make something better if you’re not sure how well everyone is collaborating together and if your efforts are really going to be utilized for the good of all.

Notice how they have the core team outlined here and they are not Joomla employees http://www.joomla.org/content/blogcategory/43/85/ http://www.joomla.org/content/blogcategory/42/87/
As a business man trying to make desions about what product you should go forward with these kinds of things are very important. It’s great that you Boonex has a bunch of sites that are up and running and working great but exactly how do we as web entrepreneurs add our own individuality to the Dolphin core and still stay on track with the rest of the folks.

In my opinion one of two things will happen without proper guidance here:

a. Many web entrepreneurs will move on and find another product they can use and then build it out from there making it their own.
b. Or they will use the Boonex core in its current state build it out from there like in example one but because their product begins to take a completely different path because of custom mods they then become trapped with a legacy version and are also never able to continue to contribute back to the community. And by the way that only add more work on the core Boonex team.

When I look at http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/wiki/DolphinDocs I see a lot of incomplete or documents that are just not up to date and a lot of support questions could be eliminated if someone on the core team was dedicated to making sure this is not the case. While there is a great timeline and roadmap here where is the documentation that would aid a developer I would hire to build a compatible plug-in or third-party mod.
Just some thoughts and please do not miss read this I love all the hard work everyone has done and is doing I am only trying to give some feedback to help make it better.

2. Buyer and Seller Protection. There needs to be at minimum a rating system for developers of mods, templates ect. See http://www.rentacoder.com we deal with this site a lot for coding projects because they have a system similar to Ebay that rates and protects both buyers and coders.

3. Agreed!

4. Support Via Forums: I know some of you guys are going to kill me when I say this but the forums are a cluster fu_K. To much information with old info mixed all together and its just hard to make heads or tails out of anything. Proper support needs to be put in place and NOT charged for unless its advance support. Please see my notes in item one about how Joomla does this. Developers, you can still make money for doing Mods and advance support if this is done correctly. Many Joomla developers create products that just easily install into the core and make a successful living designing and selling these products.

5. Please see most of my comments about in 1.

Ok guys I don’t want to be blunt but this is the Turning point where we are now when a small company or group needs to scale and they either fall on their face because they can’t or they grow up and act like a bigger fish. It’s called growing pains. Some make it through this and others don’t. The path you choose will determine the outcome.
I am very happy to see that your soliciting suggestions as this is a step in the right direction. Synergy is what is going to be key for future of this project and the way you’re going to get that is better structure and better communications.
With communities becoming the in thing right now on the web these products have a change to make reach out to every new idea out there imaginable. However, there are going to need to be some improvements in order make that possible.
As a business guy I can tell you that speed to market is absolute key many times to success and we cannot have working with just this small group here alone as it will become overwhelming for them as well as a bottle neck to us our here. Please take serious though to some of the things I wrote in number one.
Great work guys but it’s time to keep pushing beyond the envelope. Polish it and make it shine baby……!

Zorro………………………….

Thank you a lot. I've been browsing researching joomla sites for quite a while and have to admit that there's a lot for us to learn. Compared to Joomla we have some problems with Dolphin, due to it's less modular structure, but still there's a way to improve things here.

It really is a turning point now. Demand is mind-blowing a hiring more people just doesn't make it. IF we overcome these challenges - we'd be hugely successful... and I don't want to consider other IFs here.
Saks
Yeah ! I agree with Simion and Dadniel - U NEED TO HAVE MODERATORS !!! Just as u introduced Pundits on Unity - giving them special access and stuff - u need to have moderators on expertzzz to check and approve mods. I'll put Simion and Dadniel on top of my list as they are some one who perhaps I or Boonex can trust. I dont interact with a lot of people but have been in touch with Simion a lot. He is the right guy who works with his heart - Im happy to see him being a PUNDIT !

Anyways, Expertzzz see more needs layout improvement perhaps ! Im not sure if every one will agree but I think its become a bit too confusing, the top block part. The mail box has improved - happy to see that ! =D

And finally, There are a few bugs i pointed out in my post. Victor T replied, saying theyll be fixed ASAP. Once again as a reminder, dont forget to fix them too.

I have heaved some criticism on ure shoulder Andrey - but take it as a a suggestion. =D I love Boonex, LOVE DOLPHIN and am happy to see it mature with TIME. Such things like that which happened with Simion are part of life - but one should try his best to eliminate them. And so far u and ure team have proved their MARK !

WITH U FOR LIFE !

Regards

Moderators would have to be screened regularly as well. We'd need to put up a system where community would be able to wight moderators efforts.
edmond
i posted lot of feeback of scammer at expertzz feedback and to simion or dadniel to prevent them and i stopped the day when dadniel didn't understand someone have same nickname of me on another website....but andrei i'm ok with you on one point..it will nice to have moderator but i don't think it's good idea to design sellers to aproove or not a product ..simion and dadniel are serious i know but this kind of judgement between 2 products need total impartiality..on expertzz it's nearly full time see more job cause sometime that very dramatic (some people lost many money for empty zip or crappy jobs) the ip banned is not a real solution (chat and irc prooved that many time)
but for finish i think expertzz and boonex need a realterms with baktu or modmy to prevent the thief and work in same direction THE TOP!!!
Andrew Boon
Right, that's the catch with moderators. This is a mini-community on its own, and high powers along with financial considerations MAY result in not-so-genuine intentions. We gotta be careful not to create another problem, while solving one.

just a suggestion? FREE FOR ALL!! COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Would be cool and simple. Pity that the world just doesn't work that way. Bills...

just a few thing andrei and all..i want make a real big up to host for web...they really the best host in the world!!7/7 24/24 they really fast and professional..sincerly andrei, they resolve lot of dolphin problem without say "ask boonex for that.."" for example, recently had an xss attack and all my file was infected..they cleaned in 1 hours.they alway serious and fast (i never waited more half hour..) i resiliated my 11 account in france for them.here, for an answer,u need wait 48 see more or 72hours or u have a dumb on phone (surtaxed..)
really i understand ure choice to recommend that host they really the best!!!
BIG UP!!!!
Andrew Boon
Thanks for sharing. I am glad you're happy with HFW.

We have quite a lengthy history with HFW, and we recommend them genuinely, simply because have been doing great job for us as well. So, we can recommend them as customers who started from cheap shared accounts and progressed to a few top-of-the-line dedicated servers.

We do receive affiliate money from them, but we had many offers from other hosts offering 3! times as much and still we prefer to stick with HFW.

Just hope they will keep see more improving.

1. Navigation And Structure: #1 change the fonts, the text looks like it was printed with a printer that has a dirty print head, more ink on one side of some letters, and missing parts of other letters,
#2 having a two tier forum is a bad idea, i.e. free forum and paid membership forum, it means you do not have all the info open to all of the people. get rid of the paid member forum and offer the paying members something else. it is not an elite club as any tramp can walk in with $20 he found on see more the street, at the end of the day he's still a tramp, and the food is the same, just less fingers touching the buffet table. (if you see what i mean).

#3 part of the main issue with the forums is that you update often and the posts/questions being asked are not always about the current version, this makes the search function a little less useful of the version number is not in the thread or posts, and this alone counts for 75% of the frustration of new members because they try to do an edit and find that it was for 5.6 not 6.0.0002. ot get frustrated because the code they have found in a thread, was written about an older version and they can not find the code on the php file that the old thread talks about.
i propose making a new forum for each version # as dolphin advances, so would the forums, they would be a time line of useful threads for that version #
-----------------

Buyer And Seller Protection:
#1 an escrow is a must for high value deals, anything under $50 just makes it cost to much to use. remember you have to have staff able to resolve or intermediate between 2 people if a dispute is made.
#2 blatant rip off's of people work should be removed, but having said that, there is only a limited number of ways to write a line of code. Copyright protection is given to anyone that can prove they wrote the code for a mod, and that is the way for coders to go to remove someone thats copied their work, its a criminal act so use the law, boonex is not a copyright lawyer nor trading standards office. you have the law on your side, coders should use it.

boonex should make a comment section on services paid for, just like mods. but this can be open to abuse, so the services need to be paid for via the expertxxx site just like the mod downloads, one service one comment. this would prevent rival coders/service providers from leaving negative comments to discredit their competition, without paying for something.

------------------------
3. SPAM:

wow well where to start here?
I was a global admin for a student centre for 3 years, we had 6 global admin, 150 chat admin and 75 forum Moderators, with 800,000 members
now i can talk all day about how to run a forum but thats not what you want to do, you need to choose Moderators carefully, you need to also have on hand someone online to oversee any abuse or even mass deletion some pissed off Moderator might take too because they flipped. and trust me Moderators can flip like anyone else.

before you appoint any Moderators, you need to draw up a set of rules and policies that both members and Moderators are clear about, and both have to follow.
spam needs to be defined and abusive content/posts needs to be removed. what also needs to be in place is a complaint person to complain to about Moderators actions.
one major flaw with most forums is that Moderators appear unaccountable to the members. so any Moderator actions should be clear, i.e. "post deleted by Moderator Boonex for violation of spam policy"
this give everyone a clear picture of who the mod was and why they took the actions they did. the deleted post should be removed to a hidden forum for staff only, with the Moderators post replacing it on the forum. this make it 100% abuse proof by either members or Moderators, as there is a solid record of the members posts and Moderation records

choosing Moderators is something you'll have to do yourself, and choosing one or two admin over them is a wise choice too.

all should be on a 3 month probation period so you are not stuck with anyone that you later regret after a week or month or two.

someone thats on the site 12 hours a day does not always mean they will make a good Moderator, someone thats on maybe 1 hour a day can be the best Moderator you have. it's a fine line between choosing the right one and the wrong one. but one bit of advice i would give here. choose many Moderators, do not give any one Moderator more than 2 forums to deal with. split the work between many people and you build much more of a community spirit and team, all working to one goal, a better forum for all.

i would choose 4 for each forum, giving all 4 of them 2 forums each i.e.
Installation and Setup and
Troubleshooting
would all have the same 4 Moderators.
the same would go for:
Modifications and
Styles and templates.

see what i am getting at?
and yes by appointing people that are coders on those area's is a bonus as they are also more likely to reply to threads they also Moderate.

-----------------
4. Support Via Forums:

see #3 Spam i address a lot of this in that part.
-----------------

5. Features:

once the mods and admin are in place, you need a report post button near the vote +- buttons to allow members to report posts direct to admin/mods

again i address much of this in my above comments

Thank you Sammie. Very useful info. I am preparing a plan and all pieces are getting together.
sammie
ps:
Installation and Setup:
you have this as a sticky on that forum:
Upgrade Patch 5.6.0005

yet all the other upgrades and patches are in the
Upgrades <<<< forum
Updating of versions. Patches. Hot fixes.

now if staff can't post things in the correct forums, how on earth are new members going to find that post if they do a search in the correct forum for the Upgrade Patch 5.6.0005?

you should at least move it or make a copy of it and place the copy in the correct forum,

but see more like i said, if you make new forums for each version as they become public, then you'll have them all posted in the right places, and for the right versions. and they drop off the main page after 2 versions worth are posted.

Hello,

Just a Little suggestion, Hope there will be a real time chat room in expertzzz where online members can chat. The Escrow idea as I have read above is a great Idea to protect the Buyers and sellers. Anyways im new around here and im not a programmer, but I can donate free templates when I have free time to make them!!

God Bless!!!
sammie
if not the chat rooms, then i would have thought the private chat would be really useful as this allows people to talk live about jobs and mods and ask questions, you also get a better feel about the person you are talking to from a chat than a message left in your inbox.
Andrew Boon
Yes, Chat and IM will be added.
GoodWin
About "2. Buyer And Seller Protection." - think that escrow payments system may take place on Expertzzz.com to protect both parties. Same system works on GAF. Folks say it helps sometimes.

Hi there,

I am that one that is suffering greatly as some people only care about themselves and the theft of their products.

Here are some points:
1. At no point Moderator is to be a person selling on the site - as it would be a definite conflict of interest
2. Libelous and slanderous comments are to be addressed. Now you are getting yourself in a problem and leave me no option to sue - and possibly kill this site and my community.

I know you are not responsible if someone has a screw see more lose but you are responsible if this person posts something harmful and/or slanderous / libelous. No amount of 'Terms and Conditions' will wash you off the responsibilities. See how ebay is now getting shut down in France - for the same reason. Maybe you want to consider that should you not address theft, misrepresentations, theft, slander and libel that you are harming all.

In my case your member is threatening daily and even organizing other members to do that. To me, that threatening behaviour is disturbing - emotionally and professionally. for hard work I at no point should be punished by a person who spent his time in Afghanistan killing innocent people, women and children). I am on the receiving end of a post war kid who each time when his 'other personality' calls him create hell, and belive me this is daily.

You HAVE TO PROTECT ME AND OTHER PEOPLE. I think people have to know that you have sent me an email saying you are not going to do this.

So in any case, don't bother improving community, when my lawyers are done with you there will be nothing left.

It is sad to see men and professionals stooping to this level.

SHAME ON YOU BOONEX.
Andrew Boon
The whole debate has been removed. You're right, there's no place for smear campagns on Expertzzz, no matter what are the arguments.
warriorgroup
ok, one more BIG suggestion. you need to stop SPAM. I have been for the past 3 weeks spammed by Simion. I have asked him to stop spamming him nicely but he only became abusive and revengeful. I think he is a bad person and I have seen that before but he is abusing his stay on this site. No person who deals with him should be a target of his spam. I never asked to get crap from him and I don't want it. Now I get it via IM thankfully to that jerk. Please have a word with him.
Andrew Boon
SPAM is a problem and we're looking at the ways to stop it wherever we can. Please, try to avoid public defamation too. You may or may not be wrong in your judgements, but reports about particular members should be sent to us privately.
zorro
I agree with many of sammie suggestions above. Especially the one as it relates to different threads for each release.

I really like this new blog. I have had a couple problems sometimes getting a java error when I click on some of the reply to a specific poster for some reason. Does not happen with all the posers. Kind of strange.

But one thing I think would be a cool feature to add to this blog is you could sort by thumbs up or thumbs down and/or even possibly the number of thumbs up and downs.

That way you can very quickly look at the areas people are agreeing with or not as we all know how precious time see more is.

just a suggestion on moderators
why not set it so that a minimum of two moderators need to authorize the removal of mods and members etc, that would reduce the risk of a moderator abusing their position of power and trust.
Andrew Boon
good idea. one moderator can "flag", another one can "remove". Depending on amount of comments and positive feedback post may need more "votes" to be removed.

And.. I think of "hiding" instead of removing. BoonEx will then review all "hidden" mods and moderators' comments for final removal.

People like false software developers thrive on communitys like this (free software) that has just been set up. And this is a fairground attraction.

You need a database setup that will allow developers that are charging for their products, give them a liscence, and carefully manage their accounts. And flag their products based upon, theft, incompatability, and un-secure scripts that have XSS, and SQL injections. Some of which I have seen so far. You need experienced moderators to check the software see more before it can be let out to the public. Did you know that the flash widgets can be decompiled and all adds removed, with out damaging the functionality of the widgets? What happens when a developer comes along and decides to put a very nasty malicious piece of code in that action script?

You also need a decent forum software that will let these software developers gather in one united place. Something on the terms of www.vbulletin.org
(and not hackable forums scripts such as phpbb which does not has salt encryption)

You also need additional experienced beta testers for your software, I have been debugging the software since I first installed it two weeks ago, both present in the new release of dolphin and RAY. Especially the membership level permissions, which is poorly programmed.
These beta testers should have their own forum here, and provide the user end support. As well as USER FAQ

vbulletin forum software, and for your projects you can use the e-commerence software available at vbcredits.com (Vbtracker PRO) to track you work on your projects.

I would like to suggest a couple of ideas that may help with the problem of theft or deception by sellers of add ons for Dolphin.

1. Why not have a potential software developer have to apply first for testing and approval of their software. If a test server were deployed to test the add on, it would do several things.
a) Prove that it really works
b) prove it is easy to install - less demands on technical support.
c) validate who the author of the code is.
d) prevent anyone else from offering see more it later on
e) prevent crooks from easily offering stolen goods or faking software altogether.

2. Another option may be to encode add ons so that they only have a 30 day free trial capability and enforce that all add ons be sold this way. Personally I think this would be easier to crack and also delays earnings from reputable software designers, but it is somewhat of a solution.

I will be purchasing Dolphin shortly and have visited your site during my quest for such a project. I don't write code for anyone, but I do occasionally need code. Don't fret! You guys are doing a great job and you have great pricing!

i say have moderators on the forum and downloadz have to pass moderation by moderators who get to try the script correctly works and it is not theft.

i agree with whoever posted about comments on jobz.

comments should also be added on user profiles.

all comments should be moderated

i would be happy to help you guys moderating

there should be an option for non ajax

in jobs when you click dolphin or another category the page should be shorter with page numbers

live chat system see more with moderators helping mangae it

other payment options such as moneybookers, check and bank transfer

on downloadz adding there should be a reselling box which is ticked by resellers and everytime a mod is added and it is ticked and the creators username is entered the creator should be notified and asked if the product can be added and how much he want for it to be added if he wants anything for it

if anyone else has mentioned this sorry for copying but i didnt read all of the above posts

A couple of suggestions which may have already been posted somewhere else.

1. For the purchasing cart...how about a wish list with even priority levels as to what the customer hopes to purchase at some future point so everyone does not have to keep going back and forth or trying to keep track on their own with what a single program could help everyone do with less effort and confusion?

2. Regarding the present cart...I have made a number of purchases which I was under the impression, and now see more wonder if I was under the influence, that it was going to keep track of them under the "what I had bought section". But presently it shows I have never made any purchase and that I have yet to comment on 3 that I did purchase yet when I go to comment on those it says I have not purchased even those.

And quite frankly, I know I have made a number of buy,s for mods especially, which I now am not sure that I can find proof for and, disorganized that I am and when I bought them, I only had them installed on my site and never saved the actual modifications anywhere else. Don't ask and I wont tell...why I was so ignorant as to not have made any back ups...but then is this snafu about what has been bought happening to others who also have their purchases disappear from their carts?

3. We need a search function, and dare I say it, for this site which is akin to google's(ech for its politics) is for the net. The advantages for that should be self apparent, tags simply seem too inefficient for the amount of specific data we want to search for, but I have absolutely no idea what would be involved in implementing such a thing.

4. I am not one to generally criticize the artistic expressions of genius but is it just me or are there others who feel that the Dolphin logos could use with some modernization? To put it bluntly they simply appear too childish for a teen community level on up. They literally look like Barny level figures in a WMD world.

The Unity logo itself is out of site. Simple yet elegant and classy but the blue smiling dolphin character and his corresponding cartoon brothers simply seem out of place.

The Dolphin 6 and Ray 3 pictures are great as well and say a lot about the environment and imply a great deal of other wonderful things about what I know we all share and have in common but they seem to belong specifically to this community here.

But the logos, of which I am speaking about, I strongly feel could stand some maturity to reflect just what a force we want to be considered as...and that the forces of insanity all around us are going to have to reckon with as we grow...exponentially of course. ;-)

SOLIDARITY AND UNITY!
Andrew Boon
Thank you for your input. We are working on shopping cart as well and will consider your suggestions.

Search is being added too...

As for logo... well :) I got your idea, but hey, we can deliver our message and be a great force with some friendly-smily mascots at the forefront. This just adds a little more ..fun ?

The support they have at expertzzz.com is simply not acceptable, after 4 days awaiting a reply is simply bad service and very unprofessional.
Stealing of products should be not happening, there should be a report button and expertzzz.com should act on it ASAP.

I'm still awaiting for someone to delete a product, ANSWER YOU E-MAILS!!
